Argentina beats UAE 4-2 to stay alive PDF Print E-mail

ImageRIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - Federico Hilaire's pair of goals helped Argentina beat the United Arab Emirates 4-2 and stay in contention for the quarterfinals at the Beach World Cup on Monday.

Argentina was coming off a loss to Nigeria in its opening match at Copacabana Beach.

Nigeria, which beat France 3-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw in regulation, leads Group D with five points, two more than Argentina and France. The African nation has already secured a spot in the quarterfinals, while Argentina and France will fight for the final group berth when they meet on Wednesday.

In Group C, Senegal defeated Uruguay 5-2 to win its second consecutive match and reach the next round.

Italy beat Japan 6-3 behind three goals by Roberto Pasquali.

Senegal has six points, three more than Italy and four more than Uruguay. Japan, with zero points, was all but eliminated from contention.
