ImageRIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Argentine clubs Estudiantes and Lanus slipped to defeat when the knockout stages of the Libertadores Cup got underway.

Estudiantes lost 2-0 at Ecuadorean champions LDU in Quito while Argentine champions Lanus were beaten 1-0 at home by Mexico’s Atlas in Tuesday’s third round first leg ties.

LDU, the only Ecuadorean team to reach the last 16, went ahead with a stunning goal by striker Joffre Guerron in the 64th minute.

Guerron jinked his way into the penalty area and rifled a shot into the roof of the net from a seemingly impossible angle.

Damian Manso scored the second 14 minutes later, popping up unmarked in the area to convert Paul Ambrossi’s cross after a break down the left.

Lanus, 19th in the 20-team Argentine Clausura championship, continued their unhappy season by losing to Atlas in Buenos Aires.

Argentine striker Bruno Marioni, who was in the Boca Juniors squad which won the tournament last year, flicked home the winner from Diego Colotto’s cross in the 37th minute. (Writing by Brian Homewood in Rio de Janeiro; Editing by Tony Jimenez)
