Capello snubs Beckham again PDF Print E-mail

LONDON - FABIO Capello is ruthless for sacking David Beckham in England's friendly clash against Switzerland next week at the Wembley.

Ruthless because he denies Beckham of his 100th cap in the English national squad. It could have been fitting tribute for the 32 year old former captain in front of thousands of home supporters.

But Capello has lived up to his reputation as a no-nonsense manager who does not care who you are. His reason were reasonable and he even called Beckham before he announced his 30-man candidates against Switzerland.

This is the second time Capello has snubbed Beckham. When he took over Real Madrid last year, Capello also axed Beckham from his squad. However,Beckham worked harder in practice and later earned a recall to lead Real to another Primera Liga title.

Capello's main reason for axing Beck is for lack of fitness. Beckham has not played competitive football since the Major League Soccer in the US ended it's season in November last year.

Beckham has trained with Arsenal and has even impressed Arsene Wenger. But his practice sessions with Arsenal were not consistent and he has seen action more in front of cameras than on the pitch.

He has been all over the world attending parties with his wife Victoria, promoting his academy in Brazil, receiving awards, endorsing UNICEF and even watching the Spice girls in concert and cheering for Ricky Hatton in Las Vegas.

His last match which was not even competitive was in New Zealand in Dec. 1.

There is however, a silver lining behind the cloudy attempt of Becks to earn his 100th England cap. LA Galaxy's new manager Ruud Gullit has already called up Beckham for the start of their pre-season training.

Once he gets fit and plays competitive football for LA there is no reason for Capello to snub him again. LA will play in a four-team mini tournament in Hawaii on Feb. 20 Their first match is against Gama Osaka of Japan.

WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH CEBU FA?

The Cebu Football Association is currently in crisis. During my holiday in Cebu, I tried to call CFA president Jonathan Maximo but I could not get in touch with him.

All clubs in Cebu are waiting for the start of the Aboitiz Cup. It is already February and the football season calendar is almost finish and yet where is the Aboitiz Cup?

Another issue being asked by the members of the Cebu football community is what is going on with the CFA board? I heard from sources that the entire CFA board has resigned already because their term of office has already expired in the middle of last year.

Maximo has promised for an election in the middle of last year but until now people are still waiting when will be the elections?

The winner of the Aboitiz Cup is supposed to represent Cebu in the National Football League Visayas eliminations but without it who will represent Cebu? The PFF will already announce soon the schedule and the venue of the Visayas elimination but without the Aboitiz Cup how will the selection be held?

This football season the CFA has not organized a single 11-a-side tournament. Luckily Football Club Inter Cebu has organized an 11-a-side football tournament in Lapulapu city, the Denker Cup last year from August-December.

FCIC prime mover Manfred Schuwerk has even told me that he is willing to field his team to the regional elimination in case the CFA can not put up a team. He said that his team which is made up mostly of players from the disbanded Hisroshi Football Club is always practicing and anytime can play in the regional elims.

BEND IT SWEEPSTAKES

Ronaldo has received his prize, an England jersey, for the month of December. Since I came out with two columns in January I will announce the winner in my next column. Continue with your comments so that we can select the winners. GOD BLESS

beckham knew that when he agreed to play for LA Galaxy that his chances to play regulary for country will be jeopardized. having a six-month difference in football seasons meant that he won't be playing comnpetitive ball at a time when the rest of his english teamates are match ready and international matches are in full swing.

a 100th cap is a sentimental decision-a fitting tribute to a man who have offered and given much for his country. but the england NT and capello needs to focus on building the team of the future NOW and not get distracted with emotional tributes or personal milestones. perhaps a few international friendlies down the road and after getting himself match-ready will we see beckham wear the whites again.

but not for now.

I dont think Beckham was too surprised that he was ommited. Managers have to select players who are match fit. Although, even with his hectic schedule, you have to give credit to Beckham for trying. He arranged for the Arsenal stint and impressed Wenger, so it was a good try. He will get a few more tries to impress and would have won his 100th cap easily if they didnt scew up that game with Croatia. But if you take out the sentimentality of the 100th cap, I think Beckham can be proud of his international career, regardless of what will happen in the future. He has captained and worked as hard as much as any of the english superstars in recent memory.

On the Cebu situation, I think to take out as much politics as possible, the regional heads should be made accountable if they dont organize the set number of tournaments required of them every year. Thats probably the only thing these guys are suppose to be doing. You can do as much 'development' work as you want, but the competitive games played under official rules are the strongest barometer for players and coaches. It will be the venue for discovering talents as well as developing those with potential. You delay these or not hold them altogether, then football in your neck of the woods will suffer.

Well, lets put it this way. Have the likes of Robinson, Young, or Cole ever played under Capello? No! This means that perhaps Capello didn't choose Beckham because he does not need to assess him anymore.

As such, he would rather use games which technically have no implication to observe players who he has no knowledge of. After all, when he was appointed as coach, it was said that it would be good for England since he had no idea why Lampard and Gerrard can't play together. Point is, as a new coach, it would be best to scout new players first, then select those who qualify when official fixtures start coming in.

As for the Cebu FA, I do wish the best for them because ever since I started posting in the old philfootball.info forum, things have been rather volatile every now and then over there. I just hope that things would be resolved soon since based from those who I have talk to in the forum in the past, things have always been promising over there.

we shouldn't base our decision whether or not we should have a tournament for any division or age-group on the schedule of PFF. It should be a given that there should be a men's open tournament (as well as tournaments for ALL age groups) with or without a memo coming from the PFF.

so what if the schedule for regional eliminations are several months after local eliminations. that will simply mean that we already have a champion to represent us and more than enough time for the champion team to pick-up reinforcements and have them blend with the team.

so what if there is a chance that there will be no regionals or national finals. does such a possibility justify the non-holding of tournaments?

well, I do understand Capello's reasons for not giving Becks the 100th cap, there's a huge weight on his shoulders to deliver and redeem the national squad after the sub-par spell under Steve McLaren. He needs to deliver a squad that wins cups and show that he can do so in his debut game, more than just impress fans by celebrating a hundredth cap. It's gonna be a huge gamble alright had he played Becks, even if he is training with Arsenal to prepare for the MLS season. Real matches are different from training, but I believe that he will get that 100th cap eventually if he shows some good performance with Galaxy at the start of the season. Just hope that he doesn't get injured.

anyway, this time's reason is better than the last one he gave for snubbing Becks at Madrid.
