Chelsea hates me, who cares? PDF Print E-mail

LONDON, England - Phil Younghusband is a young, skilful and a good soccer player and can be a great asset to RP National senior football team in the many more years to come.

I can now say he is good because I have seen him play at the Beveree stadium last Wednesday evening (July 25) in Hampton Middlesex, the home of the Hampton and Richmond Beavers. However, I can not say if he is the best in the RP team right now because I have no comparison. I have not seen the other players play.

World class? That is not for me to judge. Only time will tell. For the fact that he plays for the reserve team of the world's richest soccer team is already an achievement. For the fact that he is a Pinoy-Brit and plays for our country, I am proud and I salute him.

Of all the forwards playing for Chelsea during the entire 90 minutes of the match, Phil was the best. However, he was put in only in the second half after they trailed 0-1 at the halftime. He provided the sparks in the second half which resulted into countless of chances. He even had at least four chances of scoring but these attempts were either caught by their opponent’s goalie or were just inches above the goal bar.

Phil was the designated hit man and he hit from all angles but was just unlucky to find the ball at the back of the net. He even made an accurate pass to an open midfielder who scored a goal. The goal was however ruled offside.

I enjoyed the match from start to finish. I enjoyed watching the young, skilful but nervous Chelsea reserves playing their hearts out but bowed in the end 0-1 to a tough and experienced Beavers eleven.

MOST WANTED MAN IN CHELSEA

It was an unforgetable experience despite of the two hours travel from North London by train and bus to the beautiful Hampton borough beside the Thames river in South London. Hampton was the summer holiday place for Henry VIII. He still has a palace there.

Before the match even started, my trip was spoiled by some Chelsea officials. I wanted to interview Phil and I approached a group of Chelsea officials hanging out at the entrance of the dugout. I presumed they were Chelsea officials because they were middle aged men, well built, and all wearing Chelsea jerseys.

I approached one of them and introduced myself and asked if Phil is around. The man just looked at me and went inside the dugout saying nothing.

Anyway, I hang out along the railings near the dugout and waited if maybe the Chelsea team would come out soon. Then a short man with a serious look approached me and angrily said. `I know you, you wrote about Phil having a publicity stunt. It was not a publicity stunt. Phil is a good boy. You are here in London you should support him.'

He said more things but I could not remember all of them. I was so shock to remember them.

He then turned around and made a zero figure with his finger and ended his speech, `You know nothing.' He then sped off to the dugout leaving me in shock. What was that? I asked myself. I guess it was a sample of Chelsea hospitality.

There were few things that I have learned from that experience. First, I am happy to know that people from the world's richest club read my column. But then I am sad because I know now that they did not read my entire column or they did not read them after all, they just heard them from other sources.

Of course, Phil needs all the support specially from a Filipino like me. That man thinks that I do not support Phil. Then I should ask him, what did I do there on the first place? Did I go to Hampton, travelled two and a half hours to support the Chelsea reserves or their opponents the Hampton and Richmond Beavers? Did I go there to enjoy the barbecue or drink a pint of beer at the Hammonds Pub?

Or course not. I went there with only one thing in mind, to see Phil play football, take his photo and ask for an interview. I was the only Filipino watching the match with less than a thousand Chelsea and Beaver fans. Oh I forgot, I saw Phil's brother James at the sidelines with a middle aged lady who looks like a Filipina.

I could have written a very interesting interview story about Phil. I had so many questions to ask from him. But this did not happen.

I managed to take some photos of Phil in action but they were not good as I was just using an ordinary digital camera. If there is a next time, then I should buy an expensive SLR digital camera with zoom lenses to get better shots.

Phil Younghusband stretching before the match The home of the Hampton and Richmond Beavers

I presume that what really upset the people surrounding Phil was when I called `publicity stunt' the activities they have done before and after the failed move of Phil to the LA Galaxy. People from PR Asia (people handling Phil) informed my boss Alain that Galaxy was to sign Phil. We were excited of course. Who were not?

But then I wrote to Galaxy and asked them if it was true. The Galaxy PR department denied it but announced that Phil was working out with them. After a week, Galaxy announced again that they were not signing Phil and he has stopped practising. I reported this and wrote some comments.

Then I read an interview from the Philippine Star about Phil endorsing some products in the Philippines. The interview was made by entertainment writer Ricky Lo. The Philippine Daily Inquirer also came out with its own feature article. Phil and James were then featured in Dyan Castellejos sports show over The Filipino Channel in which I subscribe. If these were not a PR stunts then what were they?

CHELSEA RESERVES

As for Chelsea, their reserve coaching staff should concentrate on improving their squad. It is only the start of the pre-season games. As expected the players are still not very fit and their confidence are low. They will improve with more games to come. By then maybe first team manager Jose Mourinho will take notice them, specially Phil, and let them play with the first team rather than buying those expensive imports.

I will be in Wembley watching the Chelsea against Man United match in the season opener Community Shield on Sunday. The ticket cost me £125 pounds each. My wife love Christiano Ronaldo and she vows to wear a Man United shirt for the match. I promised her that I should wear the new Chelsea neon jersey and go the neutral side of the stadium. But after the Chelsea hospitality I experienced in Hampton, I will insist on my white Tottenham Hotspur shirt. God Bless

I read Phil's with a Norwegien side now on loan,i'm sure he won't make it into the first team when he gets back,he should be sold to a championship /league 1,2 side FIRST team or at least loaned like most of his reserve team-mates like Ben Sahar,Michael Mancienne,Scott Sinclair and some others, so we can really see him play,he would benefit and he would possibly the first filipino footballer to play in a first team side for a long time.

how I'd love to have seen the community shield match, local cable didn't even air it even if espn announced it for some reason. man united supporter here.

but still, even if a guy from the blues gave you a bit of a verbal bit there but hey, at least they read it, and are trying to protect Phil. no doubt they value him. I've only seen him play in the ASEAN cup qualifiers and I was impressed, not sure if he can make it to a top division, but still, he has it. If he had played for the Philippine team for the cup tournament itself, maybe we would've had a chance, or at least didn't go down so bad.

neon chelsea kit? haha.

Yeah who cares!!! The important thing is that you did what you had to do in fixing this confusion and you are doing your part in suporting our filipino footballers and our very own kind of football. Everyone will truly have their own critics and we can't change that...

  jack,

reading your column puts me back in 1999. remember? when you had some "publicity stung" tearing your mba id in front of the lens? but that's not the point here. i just can't imagine that after all of these years of supporting, writing and making football your daily staple, you've got turned down and cold shoulder once again.

it pains me bro, but, as you have always said --- we can't please anybody. so don't stop wearing those chelsea colors --- show them that black will always be black, a journalist is always a journalist. take away our pen - we can always come up with ways to write. aren't we?

as for that moron, probably he doesn't understand english... or if he did, he can't read between the line.

i, i am not a football fanatic, although i played some football back in highschool but i consider this game as a passion. passion for those who love it and those who played it.

people always get hurt when the thruth comes out. honestly that person who insulted you was hurt five times when you wrote the truth.

anyway, just keep what you are doing because everybody knows that you're doing it for the best of philippine football.

seeing you have many followers now make me feel proud.

keep it up, big bro

I always enjoyed reading your coloumn Jack. More power to you. Telling news Frankly with no spin. On your next visit to a Chelsea Reserves match. You should request an Official PRESS accreditation from Chelsea, so you can have access to Phil. That kind of treatment you recieved from club officials is to be expected. In their eyes they didn't have any business talking to you in the first place.

Anyway I think Phil moving to MLS club Galaxy is a very very bad idea. The MLS is not a strong leauge. For a youngster like Phil his football development will be severly affected. Phil is learning a lot by playing at Chelsea Reserves.

Europe is where the best football are being played. For ex: Freddy Adu suffered a great deal by playing in the MLS at age 14 instead of going to Europe. He could have feature regulary in the Inter Milan Reserves. Instead he played only a few matches and benched on an MLS Club, with no Reserves Club system leauge. Its a good thing Freddy Adu is playing for Benfica next season. A smart move he could have done earlier.

So Phil stick with Chelsea! He's still young and have high hopes of featuring with the Sr. team. Players do get older. Drogba and Shevchenko cant play there forever.

  Hey Jack,

Ive had some moments with Brits also and received a cold shoulder. I guess they are not the most hospitable lot. Knowing your Filipino, those Chelsea idiots should have had the decency to clarify the situation with Phil instead of doing that. Now they are gonna look like total assholes and they are not gonna get any new fans from the Philippines thats for sure. I guess thats how much they value the opinion of Filipinos. Iam surprised because British club officials are usually very politically correct. Thats probably why those guys are with the Reserves. Mourinho himself said he will be toning down a lot this season because the "special one" persona isnt winning him any new fans. While other clubs are travelling to Asia to build fan bases, this is what those arrogant twats do. Stick it to them pare.

I'd also like to have a go at the local media. Its probably because they dont know anything about football and they can easily insinuate Phil can or will play for the Galaxy with Beckham. One thing is trying out and one thing is actually getting signed. They cant or wont see the fact that having one of our players make it to the MLS is like having one of our college basket ball players make it to the NBA or even the USBL. It's a pity more people read those articles instead of pinoysoccer.com They should market Phil as a good football player not a bloody commercial model. Young Filipino football players will appreciate it more and may even become inspired of what he does on the pitch rather than off it.

Let's call a spade a spade - Phil's a nice boy but his PR agency are a bunch of twits.

I just read a magazine article dated July 2007 which featured Phil and James. I think the exact line was that pissed me off was "...when Phil joins the LA Galaxy..." and not if.

  Hi Jack,
Wow you got from someone with Chelsea. Anyway, I guess it's the price you pay in your line of work. He must have heard about your comment from someone else or did not read your column's entirely, then assumed that you don't support Phil. But like most of our teachers in high school would say, when you assume something you are just making and ASS out of U and ME.
As usual great article.

People make rude comments and reactions if they're reading only half of the story, or read it fully but with little understanding.

I am maintaining a blog myself. I have articles that are sensitive, but i wrote them in a respectable way, no personal attacks on a specific ethnicity or person. But i still get hate comments.

I found out that those who leave negative comments were teenagers or in their early 20s still don't how to control their emotions.

Ironically, middle aged Chelsea staff giving you those rude comments and treatment make them look like immature teenagers.

Bravo Jack! At least you have the decency to fix the mess for Phil.. unlike PR Asia who try to hide their f*ck ups by targeting you.

Oh how they missed a good PR opportunity. LOL
