LONDON, England - Life they say begins at 40. If that is the case, then my life will only start two days from now.

If I have my way I do not want to begin life at 40. I am overweight and I have diabetes, high blood pressure, high collesterol, poor eyesight and painful shoulder

and back. At 40, my body is in trouble.

But what keep me alive and still positive in this damp and cold place they call London are my family, my wife Virma, son Lucky, daughter Tiffany and football. FOOTBALL ? I am that shallow.

I have been very shallow since I have realized I existed in this beautiful place known to everyone as Earth. I am very easy to deal with. It is very easy to make me happy. Just give me a smile and | will return it with a larger smile and a wink. Give me generosity and I will give my loyalty. Give me loyalty and I will give my life. Give me love and I will give my soul.

Since I have known her 21 years ago, Virma has been generous to me. She has given me her loyalty and her love. She has been at my side through thick and thin. She has been my best friend, my lover, and a mother to my children.

She is also a football fan. A Manchester United fan. She became one when David Beckham was with the Reds. She cursed them and made Ferguson her No. 1 enemy when they sold Beckham to Real Madrid. Two years ago she adored them back when they signed Ronaldo. Now, Fergie is handsome and Ronaldo is her idol, her imaginary lover and her fantasy.

When we had the chance to see Manchester United live at the Wembley stadium, I did not waste my time to look for tickets. Two Sundays ago, Man U met Chelsea in the English Premier League opener, the Community Shield. Watching Rooney, Ronaldo, Giggs, Van de Sar, Ferdinand play live and plus the Chelsea megastars was a dream come true to me but it was heaven for the `Little Red Devil'.

I got two tickets from the black market in the internet. Since I am not a club member of either Man U or Chelsea, I could not get a ticket. The only way I could get it was through the black market. I paid £125 for each ticket. The actual cost of one ticket was only £30. I became £250 poorer but it was worth it.

BIG PROBLEM

Two hours before the match, we had a big problem. A really big problem. When I bought the tickets over the internet, I requested for neutral seats so that I could wear my Tottenham jersey and my wife could wear her Red shirt. But when I got the tickets, I was shocked. I got two tickets at the Chelsea side of the stadium. We would be among the Blues. That was worrying.

I did not wear my Tottenham jersey but instead I wore an England shirt. No problem. Big problem, it was `Red'. The bigger problem was the `Little Red Devil', was wearing her Manchester United jersey with the big AIG prints in front. Then, I had and idea. I left her in front of the stadium and looked for a sports shop.

Bingo, I found a JJB sports shop nearby. I went in and bought a white England shirt. At least now she was safe. When we went inside the stadium through the Chelsea side, Blues supporters were staring at us. She quickly went into the toilet and put the England shirt on.

Exactly when the `God Save the Queen' was sung, we went in. All eyes were on us as we went down to our seats. I was wearing Red, and my companion was wearing an England white jersey but underneath was still a Red AIG shirt. I heard a Chelsea fan telling her companion, `That woman is wearing a Man U shirt'. We did not mind. We had two of the best seats in the stadium.

We were just two seats away from the football pitch and exactly ten meters away from the corner flag. Looking at the entire view of the stadium, I just realized that there were no neutrals in such matches. It was either you were Red or Blue.

Anyway, we managed to survive 90 minutes deep inside enemy territory. We almost jumped from our seats when Ryan Giggs scored the first goal for United in the 35th. But we were forced to clap our hands and stand up when Malouda equalized for Chelsea.

My `Little Red Devil' was ecstatic when Edwin van de Sar saved three penalty kicks to power Manchester United.

The 36 year old veteran saved Claudio Pizarro, Frank Lampard and Shaun Wright-Philips attempts to insure Man United got the Shield. Wynne Rooney then sealed Manchester's victory after Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick hit the back of the net earlier.

Twenty meters away we could only watch as the Red Devils celebrate their victory. One by one the Man U players raised the Shield and most of the applause were reserved for sir Alex. Around us we could only hear $%^&*!+@~<>#. Deep inside me I could only laugh at Chelsea. Not only that I got my sweet revenge, I have also witnessed how my `Little Red Devil' piqued Chelsea.

Hi! Just like johnsen the year 2002 was when I first really started to like football through an Argentinian chatmate. I wondered why would a girl be so passionate about a "boring" game? And so I started understanding the game until I came to the point where my hands sweat everytime the ball gets near or in the box and unconsciously burst a "yeah" or that S*** or F*** words. Not to mention the delight in seeing the ball beautifully/magically passed(much of which I have watched during the Real Madrid Galacticos era or in the La Liga).
Right now, just like in the case of Dino, it's a pity I can no longer watch a single Spanish La Liga match as SkyCable removed the Real Madrid TV Channel. Well, at least ESPN still airs the English Premiere League. I don't know but I only see a beautiful match when Arsenal or Liverpool or sometimes ManU(no offense to their fans) play. Anyway, maybe it depends on our individual tastes.
Yes just like Jack, we can start with our family to promote football slowly. Watch a match with your kids and wife, buy a football or your favorite team's shirt replica, etc... and never lambast, criticize or even mention that popular filipino game. We'll just have to respect it and its followers. :)

to tell you the truth... i only got hooked at football just 2002. and its not by tv (EPL and la liga games are only aired at espn last 2005 i think, and i dont even have cable) or internet or by even somebody's raving for football. i got it from the fifa 2002 game out of curiosity. well in that game, chelsea's roster sucks wahehe. man u is a power. in a way i have seen my fave teams improve. i love chelsea because they have starpower, regardless of the sources hehe. i love man u because they are really gutsy, they just dont quit, they are just like cinderella, and if you allow me, like barangay ginebra. and i love them because they beat chelsea for the championship, take that chelsea! i love several teams in europe. and the thing is when i watch these teams play its like WOW. the way you experience the beautiful game is like magic. more magical than even the basketball. for me, an average filipino citizen who grew up football is american gridiron, its just a shame we are not even looking at this games potential. right now i love football. its just a shame i dont have the means to enjoy it. im envy you guys for watching an actual game. thats superb. why else would all other countries go gaga in a game so simple yet so complex. why would people go ballistic when their team lost, even when their team won. filipinos have a lot of heart. i wish football grow in philippine soil. football will love filipinos for just that ^_^

It is surprise to have heard of a filipino couple who are football fans. I do hope and pray that your children will inherit your hobby and passion for football. It is just so rare a phenomenon in such a country as the Philippines to have people like you. Your family could be a starting point for the football development in the Philippines in no time. I do believe that a thousand steps begins with one.

coach, my friend and i also got into the same situation when we watched an DC United - Galaxy game. We were rooting for DC but we were seated beside some drunk Hispanics so clapping our hands was the best cheer we could do. Hehe.

Happy Birthday di-ay! Wishing you good health and more football stories to write!

Jack, you are very lucky to have a lifelong partner who shares the same passion as you do! Watching the community shield between two of english footballs modern rivals is such an experience. What makes it more exciting is the fact that you guys are watching it behind enemy lines!

Virma, the Little Red Devil... LOL. Jack, the nickname fits her very well. Virma and I will also get along well. I'm a Man U with our without Becks. I just love the excitement and controversy they bring into the game. Got to love the mind games Fergie plays with the other coaches as well as his players. Much like the way Phil Jackson had with Bulls back when he and MJ was with them.

i'd give it you and Virma sitting with all the "Blues". Wow and the price you paid for those tickets was ridiculous but I guess it was worth every penny of it. I did watch that game in StarHub cable here in Singapore. Van de Sar was brilliant. Saving 3 possible goals during the penalty shoot-out. I jump off our old beaten-down TV couch on his 2nd and 3rd save.

glad to read your article, I always make it a point to read all your articles.

God bless and stay safe my friend and give my regards to Virma.

  Hi Jack,

I will get along well with Vilma, me being a red devil fan since 1978. Again, I can only say, the hands of faith have dealt you a great hand by planting you in the UK and thus the opportunity to visit the new Wembly. Undoubtedly it will establish itself as one of the greatest football meccas. Already, players left and right have commented on the special atmosphere it has the moment you step onto the pitch. Both United and the Spurs arent off to the best start. We lost Rooney and it seems you have lost Berbatov.

To Dino, i share your grief at espn/star sports. Two weeks in and still no man utd games (Although i feel it would have been painful watching the two draws utd have come up with. Dont worry, its still early in the season and we will be at the right end of the table come the new year). They have the manchester derby coming up this sunday and they will not show that either in the Philippines. One of the most heated rivalries in the premiership and we will probably end up with a Brimingham game (no offense to their manager, Steve Bruce, a red devil legend). Again, give them a piece of your mind at their website (espnstar.com). I already have given them my monthly tongue lashing.

Anyway, Jack, keep it going with your columns. Its really refreshing, a touch of home in the capital of world football.

  omg omg,
I envy you so much right now.
to have watched a game that close, holy crap that's nice.

As much as I would've gone to the red side and burst an eardrum with all the cheering, I like how you guys cooly sat in the blues side tho, haha, nice touch. It would've suck though if ManU won, but that penalty shootout was magic.

Both our teams lost out in the opening games tho, ManU drew with reading and Tottenham lost. blah. Heck, ManU had another draw yesterday with Portsmouth, they already lost Rooney and Ronaldo got sent off. I'm getting seriously worried now.

But still, I hate local cable. Not a single ManU match being televised the whole month. I hate it.
