Martinez rules PFF in second attempt PDF Print E-mail

LONDON - FORMER Philippine's Mr. Football Jose Mari Martinez finally claimed his crown as new Philippine Football Federation (PFF) King after edging Ed Formoso in a controversial election during the football congress in Manila.

According to a report of Manila reporter Nick Giongco, Martinez edged out Formoso by a single vote 15-14.Out of the 32 voters only 29 showed up as presidents from Iloilo, Surigao del Norte and Masbate failed to show up.

Philippine Olympic Committee secretary general Steve Hontiveros and his deputy Mark Joseph then asked outgoing PFF president Johnny Romualdez to proclaim Martinez despite some protest from Formoso and his supporters. The supposed to be suspended NCR FA was allowed to vote.

It was second time lucky for Martinez also ran for the PFF top seat but lost to outgoing president Johnny Romualdez four years ago. It was however a disappointing finish for Formoso who run a hardworking campaign which brought him to all the corners of the archipelago where the beautiful game is played.

What started as a four corner fight for the PFF presidency ended in a tussle between Martinez and Formoso in the homestretch. Negros Rep. Charlie Cojuangco and former national team player Nonong Araneta were supposed to run but withdrew their candidacy few days before election.

Martinez has been involved in football in his entire life, playing for San Beda and La Salle during his schools days. He was with the RP national men's team and was even named RP's Mr. Football twice during his prime as a player.

He also served as the PFF executive vice president for four years and is currently working for Nestle's Milo summer clinics. The clinic has started with 15 camps and now has expanded to 60.

During his campaign Martinez promised to conduct year-long age group tournaments, conduct national training programs, strengthen the national men's and women's teams, initiate grassroot programs, solidify media exposure, establish a football foundation, and tap the support of the private sector.

His ambitious projection is to make football the country's No.2 sport by 2011 with or without FIFA fund. `I promise that if I am not able to do what I promised in six months then, I will resign,' he said in a report by Philippine Star's Joaquin Henson.

LET'S SUPPORT HIM

The guy who worked the hardest in this election Ed Formoso, vowed to cry like a river if he loses this election. But according to his diary he did not feel any pain. He did not cry. He lost by only one vote and his supporters are urging him not to end this fight. `The quest for the presidency is `UNFINISHED'. he said.

I really do not know what the PFF ruling is towards the election for the King of Philippine football. But considering the result of the election, Martinez faces a very big and difficult task to unite the FA's all over the country. Remember 14 presidents did not believe in his promises and programs. How can he get the support of these presidents to make his programs succeed?

My only suggestion is for the FA's to cooperate with Martinez for the good of Philippine football. The PFF is celebrating it's 100 years of football existence in our country. No less than FIFA president Sepp Blatter is the guest of honor in the gala night. But what is there to celebrate for?

Let's celebrate because we are at the bottom of the FIFA rankings, let's celebrate because we can not even participate in the Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Thailand next month, let's celebrate because we do not even care to participate in the world cup qualifying matches or we celebrate just to waste FIFA and sponsor's money?

Instead of the money to be spent for the gala night why not the new president spend the money in organizing a weeklong or three-day football congress to plan and hammer out the beautiful game's direction in the next four to ten years.

Martinez can take this time to present his program in details to the `unbelievers' so that he can convince them that he means business and that his supporters were not wrong in delivering him the votes.

As for Ed Formoso, his luck ran out during election day. He worked hard and he almost won the race. Do not waste your time moaning. Continue supporting football and plan for the next four years. We do not know, you might just be like Martinez, who was lucky the second time around. GOD BLESS

  Ronaldo,

As you see most of the time only the private schools are involved in football. It is up to the PFF to convince DECS to make football the center of their PE curriculum.

i strongly believe that the key to football becoming the 2nd (why not the first) most played game in the Philippines lies in it being part of the PE curriculum in both (if not most) public and private schools.

I am a Bosconian, and the reason why most Bosconians follow, play or understand the game-EVEN IF THEY MAY NOT BE ACTUALLY PLAYERS-is because the sport was part of their lessons. Basketball and other sports were secondary. Football was the center of our free time. That is why in most Don Bosco schools, the football field is located at the center of the campus, accessible to everyone, anyone-anytime.

i am not suggesting that people follow the Don Bosco approach towards the sport. i'm suggesting the inclusion of football in our PE curriculum. we can perhaps start with DECS and our private schools. this would be a scaled down "Kasibulan"-a managegable grass-root program. require PE instructors to teach the game. of course, first things first-these PE instructors needs to be trained first.

i don't ecpect ronaldinho's and henry's and messi's to immediately come out from our public school system. what i'm looking forward to is a new generation who understands the sport, has the desire to support it, and has the passion to support those who play it.

  Hi,

Ronaldo made some great suggestions. Jack, why dont you post mr. martinez' email add here so he can get all these inputs. Or maybe ask Alain to set up a bulletin board for the PFF so that everyone can post suggestions. At this point I think they need a lot of help and it will also show how many people really are concerned out there.

I was attending this Decs sponsored regional meet in Bulacan. I was surprised to see a football final as there arent any visible football fields in the area except for the stadium in Malolos. But its a great start and DECS does seem to have a budget themselves for this. Its the private schools in the Luzon provinces that dont have much support for football. That idea about coordinating with local gvoerment units to set up football pitches is a great idea.

Right now, I agree, lets give the new guy a chance. help him any way we can.

Regards,

Jam

hm, judging from the tone of some posts, is the victory of Martinez over the more favoerd Formoso shadowy? is it going to be a Romualdez part two?

I learn a lot about local football business from your blog, haha.

oh well, as long as we get results, good results, that's what matters I guess. and he better make good on his resignation promise if ever.

  i have modest expectations.

i expect directions to be given to FA's for age-group tournaments to be institutionalized. meaning - there should be at least one tournment (and not just a festival) for each age group identified by the PFF. let scarce resources (if PFF does "share the wealth") go into the holding of tournaments.

i expect age-groups P15 (U14 ?) above to have National finals. the competition and the prestige in winning a national championship would further spur the desire to be better players.

i expect the PFF to facilitate or aid the FA's in approaching local government units with the intent to develop province, city or municipal owned football fields.

i expect the PFF to dialogue with DECS and CHED so that school-based competitons will be required to be sanctioned by the FA's.

i expect the PFF to try get football be part of the PE-curriculum of DECS.

the abovementioned expections, when achieved, will eventually increase the mass base of football players and supporters. Our nationals teams-down the road-will surely benifit from this.

  Jack,
You were dead on when you wrote about UNITY after the PFF elections as reports have it that the supporters of the losing candidate do not and will not accept the hairline win (only one vote difference) of Martinez. Well what is in new in Phil sports. It (Phil sports) has the same problem as our government. Losing candidates and their supporters who do not concede defeat and work for unity and for the good of the sport they all claim to love but instead think of clever ways to divide the organization in order to gain something out of the elections. Whatever it is, by causing a division in an organization will eventually render it useless. Hopefully they will realize that their actions (to cause division) do a more harm than good.

Great article. Keep them coming and more power.

Mr. Mari Martinez should concentrate to the DFB papers which were done between 2000 and 2002 w/ PFF GenSec Chris MONFORT.

THIS plans sounds for me good , so he should force the CLUB-LIGA -SYSTEM , which Mr. MONFORT did also like.

THE PLANS are ready ...

Formoso will only have to wait in the wings for six months before he get the opportuniity to become the PFF president.
Martinez is being quoted as saying . .
I promise that if I am not able to do what I promised in six months then, I will resign.

First of all when does the six months begin?
Or will THE silver tongue of Martinez get himself out of the hole that he appears to have buried himself in.

Within six months Martinez said he will . .
1) conduct year-long age group tournaments, 2) conduct national training programs,
3) strengthen the national men's and women's teams,
4) initiate grassroot programs,
5) solidify media exposure,
6) establish a football foundation,
7) tap the support of the private sector.

ALL OF THAT IN SIX MONTHS OR HE WILL RESIGN.

MY FIRST THOUGHTS ARE . . NO CHANCE.

How many age groups will these year long tournaments cater to. Will they be for boys and girls. Are they Nationwide or only in Manila or his own favored region.

Does he have enough manpower to conduct national training programmes.

How will the mens and ladies National teams be strengthened. That will make interesting reading because I thought that the National coaches had in fact been strengthening the teams. Maybe Martinez has a different slant on strengthening.

Initiate grassroots programs (AGAIN). What form will this take.

Solidify media exposure. My understanding when I have spoken to media outlets that the brown envelope speaks all languages and organizes column space. Does PFF have the money to pay for brown envelopes.

A FOUNDATION AND SUPPORT OF THE PRIVATE SECTOR. And all that in six months.
as they say . . . Only in the Philippines.

we always say "lets forget the past and move forward" for the sake of UNITY. but how can you achieve REAL unity when the proclaimed winner is being questioned? and when there is a question, it has to be answered or else there will always be doubts to it.

it was very clear from the results, Martinez does not have a clear MANDATE. it is not a good start for his administration. imagine having a football team where out of the 11 players on the field, 5 are attacking your OWN goal

if i were Martinez, i will have the issue resolved right away. nip the bud, buddy. is the issue of technicality of ABSOLUTE majority valid or not? (Absolute majority in PFF election as per bylaws means 16 1=17 votes since there are 32 members PFAs). Martinez got only 15 votes.

in the PFF bylaws, it is very clear that Congress is the ULTIMATE authority in PFF. Please dont go to the civil courts again.

The 32 PFAs, the Congress, should decide the issue, head on. NOW

Hat's off to Ed Formoso for a great fight.

Let's now all hope that Mr. Martinez can deliver and make good on his promises for the next for 4 years. I hope all of the FA's will unite for the greater good of Philippine Football in the coming years.
