Messiah of RP football? PDF Print E-mail

LONDON - Ed Formoso is a 53-year-old football maniac who dreams that in less than a week's time he will be ruling the Philippine Football Federation (PFF).

On Nov. 25 at the Bayview Hotel, in Manila, FA presidents from all over the country will elect who will be the PFF King for the next four years. National Capital Region is still suspended and can not vote.

Aside from Formoso, other candidates are former Negros congressman Charlie Cojuangco, former Philippines Mr. football Jose Marie Martinez and former national team player Nonong Araneta of Iloilo.

Of the four candidates, I have picked Formoso as the main man to win the crown for his efforts in trying to woe the provincial presidents. Besides, the other three candidates did not care when I tried to communicate to them.

I have never met the candidates before except for Martinez whom I worked with a project in Cebu many years ago. I called Martinez in his mobile phone and he promised to e-mail me his program but until now I am still waiting.

I also got in touch with Charlie Cojuangco but it was a male secretary who answered the phone. He promised me to also e-mail his program but until now I am still waiting. For Nonong Araneta, I guess I had the wrong number because nobody seems to answer the mobile phone.

40-DAY CAMPAIGN TRAIL

If you go to ourpff.org you can find Formoso's campaign diary, program of ruling the PFF and other plans in making football successful in our beloved Philippines.

But what struck me most is his determination to win this election. He said in his website that he has considered running as PFF president since 2002 during the reign of Rene Adad.

He worked his campaign as if he is running for senate, visiting all the provincial football association presidents starting from Oct. 17 and will culminate on Nov. 25 during election day. Has anyone among the other three candidates done that? None. That is why he has got the advantage going into election day.

Formoso has personally talked to the presidents, board of directors, and secretary generals to present his program for PFF and then listen to the problems of these associations.

The foundation of his campaign is copied from the Fifa president's Joseph Blatter's own campaign program when he run for Fifa president few years ago, `Spread the Wealth, Share the Wealth'.

It is a very simple program but if you disect it, it is very attractive to the presidents of the FA's. Formoso promises to distribute the millions the PFF receives from Fifa. But of course that is minus the expenses of the PFF in Manila and the national teams. I do not want to elaborate this program because it is all in his website.

His 40-day campaign plan is almost finish and I am pretty sure he has convinced a lot of presidents to vote for him.

Jesus prepared for 40 days in the desert before he started his quest to save the souls of mankind. Can Ed Formoso become president and save Philippine football? Only the FA presidents know. After Nov. 25 we will have a new president to replace Johnny Romualdez. And only then we will know if indeed he is the Messiah of Philippine football.

COJUANGCO VOTE

My heart supports Ed Formoso but my head is on Charlie Cojuangco for a simple reason that the former Negros Occidental congressman has the power, money, clout and connections. Cojuangco has also campaigned but not as determined a Ed Formoso.

Cojuangco has presented his program to all Luzon FA presidents in a luncheon he organized in Manila. His fellow candidates Marie Martinez and Formoso were also present to announce their own programs. Araneta did not show up. Cojuangco is also scheduled to meet the presidents of Mindanao and Visayas.

In his diary, Formoso commented that he is also impressed by the programs presented by Cojuangco and Martinez during the meeting with the Luzon presidents in Manila. He said that if he gets the PFF top spot he will surely invite the two to sit in the PFF board.

I wished I was in that meeting so that I could comment on Martinez' and Cojuangco's programs.

just how many people open this website? and if they do, are'nt they interested with soccer? pity. im a new comer fan of soccer, after i've watch the sea games and qualifier round in bacolod suddenly i was hooked to this beautiful game. but sad to say we do not have so much attention for the game. just looked at the PFF election how many of the candidates backed out, i wonder what is their reason for backing out? just how much fund do we have in the federation?...hope we'll create advertisement for this game, and media also will help encourage the people in bringing this sport to another level. Not just another news in the paper just to fill up the vacant space, cause i've notice a difference in the newspaper, a bigger event for soccer but just filled out a small space, and with a small event for basketball but occupied a large space in the newsprint. bad...very bad.

  CEBUROO,

Let's wait and see but Marie did not even care to send me his program during the campaign period.

Well it seems that it is all over and Mari is the new President.
Now is the time for all his opponents (including me) to congratulate him and give him the space, opportunity and the respect he needs to deliver Philippine football where he has promised it should be.
He will be watched very colsely by all and sundry. He HAS to deliver on his promises as that is the reason why he has been given this position. Failure to do so will be unacceptable.
Is there a complete list of the promises of Mari's and a time frame as to the implementation of said promises.
How transparent and fan friendly is Mari going to be. By that I mean will he address concerns of the fans by answering comments in websites etc.
Will the PFF have use of a website

Formoso is the man for the PFF Presidency! Football is all about passion, so if Formoso really went to that extent in his campaign then he deserves to be the next PFF President and the MAN to lead Philippine Football from its slumber. Philippines deserve to have a National Team who will duly represent the country in the international stage. Come on let's go for the World Cup...in 5-10 years?

Im well Jackie boy thank you. You havent changed much if that is indeed a recent photo.

There is now talk that your messiah has also pulled out of the race leaving it all to Mari. Oh boy as they say. . . . only in the philippines. What a mess even if it is still a two horse race. So many conflicting stories still going on and just a few hours from the election.
Some things never change. Like you JACK

  Hi Jack,

On the England loss, I was following the game on the internet. It was a terrible loss, considering the keeper made a blunder on the first goal, letting a soft shot slip thru his hands. That is going to be the major issue for Mclaren as he opted to play Scott Carson ahead of Paul Robinson who has been considered the best English keeper for some time now. Anyway, I think England lost their chance way before that Croatia game. Too many draws and that away loss in Russia were the more critical games. All in all, results will decide if you play in the European Championships. It wont matter if you have Gerrard, Lampard, Ferdinand, Rooney and Beckham on your team. I am really saddened because being a Man Utd fan, Ive also supported the English team. Roy Keane said that the English players are concentrating too much on the Premiership and their body language showed that they werent prepared to give life and limb for their country. Maybe Mclaren could not get the best out of them. A player has to want to play for his coach also. Thats why you have to admire Russia and in a way, Scotland, who although the latter did not qualify, beat France twice and drew their other game with Italy. The Scots were prepared to die for Coach Alex McLeish. And that is why Maclaren was sacked within hours of the Croatia game. For the English, they have to wonder, was it really a good decision to sack Ericsson who had a far more impressive record than Maclaren?

Reddevil

I just hope whoever gets the top post in the PFF delivers.

not just in making football a more household and mainstream name in the Philippines, but also in bolstering the Philippine National Team.

In other news tho, I was shocked by the England loss to Croatia this morning. Is Steve McLaren going?

How are you my old friend? Nice hearing from you. I have not heard from Ed until he announced his plan to run for PFF president. Just pray that this election will bring a better PFF for the best of Philippine football

Sounds like the PFF election is unravelling into a non event. I also believe that of the four original contenders I would have had to look outside e square for a suitable president.
Its all very well for Ed Formoso to paint a wonderful scenario for the future of Philippine football but what the heck was he doing for all the years when he was involved in the inner sanctum of the PFF. He was their publicist and you could not get any information re the PFF and what they were doing. Now he is clever with his presidential election gimmicks but the past SHOULD come back to haunt him. But given that the Filipino has a short memory (especially when it comes to political promises) Formoso has one foot in the door of the new PFF edifice that is being built to perpetuate te memory of Jonny Romualdez.

As for Mari Martinez. Given his past track record of all talk and little substance the future does not look good for the credibility of the PFF for the next four years. I have listened to Martinez on many occasions in the past and he certainly has the gift of the gab but when shove comes to push there was always someone else who prevented him from carrying out his plans.

WILL IT BE THE SAME FOR THE FUTURE OF THE PFF AND PHILIPPINE FOOTBALL IN GENERAL.
A new broom sweeps clean and unfortunately currently the walis tingting's are not strong enough to sweep away the residue of past regimes. My belief is that it will be the staus quo with the old and the new.
Just promising to share the wealth with the provincial associations is not going to change the course of Philippine football.
The new adminnistration needs to be strong willed with a definitive vision for the future not a rehash of old and tired ideas.

  Promises, promises.

As we all know promises during elections (esp. in the Philippines) is always flowery.
"Lots of good plans up ahead. I'm going to do this, going to do that." Although, these aspirations are
great, the real test is bringing them to life. It's really nice, though if we are able to read about
the plans of the other 3 - (just read, the last article) make it 2 candidates, atleast we'd know what to expect and what fresh idea, they can inject into the ailing
Philippine Football scene. I guess all we can do here at pinoysoccer(since we cant vote) is hope for the BEST!!

I hope the next PFF president, would bring life to "The Beautiful Game", here in our beloved country Pilipinas!!

  Hi Jack,
Charlie is backing out of the race for the PFF presidency citing that the PFF is not ready for a major change. I just read an article by Joaquin M. Henson at philstar.com. Well I hope that remaining crop of candidates will make good of the promises they are "dishing" out in their individual campaigns for the PFF presidency. Charlie would have been a good bet, like you mentioned he has the clout, money and power. But he also brings with him the specter of politics. This is both good and bad. But in my opinion politics will always do more harm than good to sports organizations like the PFF. Look what happened to BAP. Anyway that (BAP) is another story. So it is my fervent wish that whoever wins will do their respective best for the greater good of football/soccer in our country.

By the way, I like the new layout of this site. Well, I'm always a sucker for dark or black backgrounds (",)

More power and wishing you the best. Keep the articles coming.

Halong,
Erik

  Hi Jack,

Its a pity the other candidates havent responded. I guess they dont know how a simple reply can reach many of the stakeholders thru your coloumn and pinoysoccer (it would actually make a good feature and further drive people to this site, why not float the idea of giving them space for their individual programs here? Just like youtube is doing for the US primaries).

Personally I wouldnt know any of them from Adam and wouldnt know who to support. Ive shook Johnny's hand a few times during awarding ceremonies of the tournaments we enter but thats not much is it? I am just inclined to give other guys (aka Martinez and Cojuangco) a chance to run the show since Johnny and company have had their shot. Araneta and Formoso seemingly have close ties with Romualdez.

While I am giving my 10 cents worth, I'd like to add that since all of them have some good ideas and have the best in mind for football in the Philippines, the only other values that they should hold dear is transparency and accountability. If they screw up big time (like not sending a Philippine team to a regional event because they either lost or sent the entry form late), sana naman they should have the decency to resign. Wishful thinking? Probably. But it should be like that. Actions speak louder than words. If you show you cant handle the small things than you should have no business being in charge of football development in this country.

More power Jack.

Reddevil.
