CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - The newly elected Cebu Football Association board has started to serve the football community of Cebu on the right track after successfully hosting the RP National men's football team last week and at the same time organizing the 8th Cebu National Inter-Club football championships.

The board made up mostly Cebu's football workhorses have worked night and day to make the two projects successful. Credit is due mainly to the tireless CFA president and Queen City United official Richard Montayre, football benefactor and construction magnate Ricky Dakay and Queen City Football Club honcho Raffy Musni.

Since Montayre decided to run for CFA president early this year, I never had second thoughts on his capability to organize. He has been a football player, and coach all his life and now a very capable leader.

During the election period, Montayre was not even keen on running as CFA president because of the big responsibility that lies ahead. He even dragged Engr. Dakay and Bro. Mari Aberasturi SDB and convinced them run. But the Cebu football community has seen how this man worked and they decided that he is the one to lead them.

I have known Montayre since he played for the legendary M. Lhuillier football squad in the 80's. He played as a no-nonsense defender for the Jewelers. He was drafted to play for the Philippine Airlines football team in Manila where they played in the second division of the National Capital Region Football Association (NCRFA) football league.

PAL football team has disbanded but Montayre stayed with the company and continued playing for local teams in Cebu..

In the 90's I coached the University of San Carlos Golden Booters for four years from 1991-1995. When I was promoted to a desk with Sunstar Cebu, there was too much pressure from work, I then resigned as coach of USC..

Then I learned later that Montayre was taking over. I was so happy that he was taking over. Montayre is a USC alumnus he is a yellow blooded Carolinian. He iss also dedicated to football and then I knew that my team was in good hands..

Today (May 4) is championship clash in the men's division of the 8th Cebu National Inter-Club championships at the USC Talamban campus football field. It is the highlight of the weeklong football extravaganza which started last Saturday (April 27) when the RP National Men's team visited Cebu to promote the Asian Challenge Cup Group 2 tournament which is set in Iloilo on May 13-17.

It was for the first time in many years that Cebu has hosted the National team. The CFA board with Montayre's leadership rose to the challenge and accommodated the Azkals in their three day activities in Cebu city.

The Azkals played against Queen City United FC and then the Cebu selection team during the opening of the Inter-Club championships..

CEBU SELECTION TEAM CONTROVERSY

The selection team was hastily assembled and was coached by Cebu's legendary coach Glen Ramos. The players were named a week earlier and a lone practice session was scheduled. To his disappointment coach Glen was surprised to see only a few players during the practice session.

Since a lot of players did not show up and did not commit to the team, coach Glen was forced to beg from Queen City United team and DB-Pinoysoccer.com team to show up for the match.

During the match day, six players from FCIC who were named did not show up in their proper football attire. Only Rocky Garciano for FCIC showed up fully in football attire and was willing to play.

Coach Glen and the rest of the CFA board were furious. It was insult to their authority that these players refused to play in a much hyped match against the RP national team. What added insult to injury was that these players showed up during the opening ceremonies but were in civilian clothes.

I heard from various sources that top Football Club International Cebu officials did not know about the refusal of their players to play (How true is it Manfred?). The players according to my source wanted to play but an official who has been with the team since they were still part of the Hiroshi FC refused them permission.

Shame, The Cebu selection could have put up a better fight against the RP squad instead of suffering a pathetic, 6-0 loss. Shame, RP coach Norman Fegidero was eyeing two Cebu players from FCIC to suit up for the Azkals in future international tournaments.

Forward Junard Aguilar and defender Jon Michael Flores were among the six players who refused to see action against the Azkals.

Aguilar plays college football for University of the Visayas and was a a graduate of the now defunct M. Lhuillier football program while Flores was a former National youth player and was also a member of the Philippine Army football team.

Coach Norman has showed interest in them but with that attitude, they have just thrown away their chance to play for the national team, which is a dream of everyone who plays the beautiful game.

BEND IT SWEEPSTAKES

Finally, future registered nurse Dominique has claimed her prize for the Bend It sweepstakes. I sent her the England jersey since I came from home for a holiday last April 27. Dominque just graduated from Colegio de San Agustin-Bacolod and was bitten by the football bug since she volunteered to help the Laos team during the Southeast Asian Games football tournament in Bacolod in 2005..

Dominique has also promised to volunteer for Pinoysoccer.com coverage during the Asian Football Challenge Cup in Iloilo. Pinoysoccer.com readers look for me in Iloilo and I will give you some promotional T-shirts. GOD BLESS

QUOTE-many of those who played were on the original list. the CFA, majority of whom are coaches and managers (fortunately), also recognizes the authority of any coach to select the final list of players. with the list of nominees as a guide, glen picked the cebu team who could serve best the purpose of the exibition match - players who play relatively clean and understands his plays. not players who think they are better, not players who demand that they be picked or else they will critize everyone in all the online football forums they can post in.-QUOTE

Hmmm are you referring to me? If so, then youre completely wrong. Im only posting what they did WRONG and what they couldve have done different. If they had respect for others, they would tell them how it really is instead of saying something and then doing the opposite. A simple explanation would be fair for the coaches and players who believed what was said. Is that too much to ask for? And if you think i go on every forum and bitch about this, then youre wrong. I posted only on this forum. And i never demanded to be on that team. Get your facts straight.

There were several other factors that the CFA and coach ramos considered when they choosed who could play against the NT.

first was that this was an exibition game, a tune-up match at the most. the match was arranged so that the local fans get to see the NT, and so that the NT coaching staff can assess the match fitness of the players.

The CFA and glen also had one other concern in mind, that the cebu players choosen will play clean and not cause an injury in an exibition match. when i saw the original list of nominees, i saw names belonging to those that had a history of rough and dirty tactics. thus, i wasn't surprised when they were'nt able to play. CFA and glen knew better than to risk the NT team players to injury in, again, an exibition game.

many of those who played were on the original list. the CFA, majority of whom are coaches and managers (fortunately), also recognizes the authority of any coach to select the final list of players. with the list of nominees as a guide, glen picked the cebu team who could serve best the purpose of the exibition match - players who play relatively clean and understands his plays. not players who think they are better, not players who demand that they be picked or else they will critize everyone in all the online football forums they can post in.

QCU organized the tournament and spent for the exibition match. thus, i don't find anything wrong for them to arrange a pick-up game between themselves and the NT. you don't see other clubs and schools complaining why they weren't part of the football clinic held in lapu-lapu. people knew the hectic and short schedule of the team, thus it wasn't a big deal for them. only the ill-informed would'nt understand.

in the future, we may have for ourselves a regular CFA players pool who practices and plays regulary. by that time, we can easily form a well prepared selection for matches such as these. there will be other NT visits, there will be other opportunities.

Player, less than 50% showed up. We all saw that. I can understand what youre saying, and i can respect that if thats how it really was the way they meant it to be. But that particular part wasnt mentioned in the coaches meeting or at the try outs. If he had some sort of respect for the players, then he would have said that it was still a screening process, rather than saying straight out that nominated players was in for sure. In that case, he failed miserably. No respect for those who showed up. He lied.

As for the game. The starting defense have played together for many years, so its not a surprise really that they could hold back the attacking force of the national team. Theyve played and know each other really well. Rest of the team was invisible maybe except for Julius Acre who at least tried to do his best.

Hi MikeH just a little correction, I was also present in the said try-out and Yes not all of the nominated players during the coaches meeting did'nt show up, and i think only 60% was there. But I would say that the CFA Board and the coaching staff was fair enough of respecting the nominated players, Bro.Mari handed over to the appointed Coach Glen Ramos the list of nominated players and they were assigned to one group and I think you were part of it. My take of what had happened is this, nominated players are nominated players not the final list, a selection process still have to be administered and that was the result, the coaching staff segregate us per position during the warm up and double check our potentials during the screamage. Selection is always controversial, favoratism, and whom you now will always pop up in our minds, but its always the coach decision that will be followed in the end. Yes, we didnt see the best of Cebu on that team because of those who didnt came, but i think 20mins before the first goal is good enough for a team that didnt had a practice session considering were up againt's the best in the Philippines and not to mention including the Fil-Foreigners.
But I will agree with you that the QCU players should have given up their post on the selection game to give the opportunity to others for them to show up their talents.

Well well the Cebu "selection" controversy. Lets see it from another point of view, from someone who was present at the day of the try out. 11 out of 25 players who was nominated showed up. If i remember correct, not one person from QCU stepped up to the spot where the nominated players were asked to stand. Then Glen Ramos said out loud and clear, that those who have been nominated are in and will play on sunday and the rest of the players had to try out. But boy was that a big lie! Same was told on the coaches meeting, that nominated players would play and others had to try out. By the end of the "try out", a lot of the nominated players was left out. In came players who came to play the last 45 minutes of the 11 aside game. Of course, they were already a part of the coaches plans and the CFAs plan. As i see it, the nomination was only a simple cover up and a huge hoax, and a big slap on the coaches and players faces who showed up and brought their players. The QCU players who showed up? Well, they got to play on saturday and on sunday. Begging? The coaches didnt have to beg because they already had their plans ready before the try outs.

As for the FCIC players. Aguilar was present at the try out, so was a couple of other players, but not Rocky, Flores and Ktec/Alazas. Aguilar was chosen to play and was given a message that he must give a message to his teammates. As for the other players who didnt show up who were nominated, they were still included in the "selection" team. That whole selection thing was a big hoax. Of course you can say its a selection team, yes, a selection team between 2 teams, not the whole of Cebu. The leaders in the CFA are heavily connected to the two teams. Not a surprise how the "selection" ended. If players dont want to play, then that should be ok, but they shouldve at least let the coach know that they werent going to play.

As for Aguilar and speed. He can still make it if he is serious and is willing to give it a go. He is still a very good player if he wants too, but often he is lazy. Its not too late for him if he wants to change his mind.

Rocky actually approached glen an hour befor the MNT arrived and told him that he cannot say no to his former coach and that he will play for the Cebu Selection.

there were no more words after that but reading between the lines, i knew someone didn't want him to play.

Aguilar should have tried out much earlier when his speed was undiminished. he now is heavier and although he can still outrun most cebu defenders, i don't think he can do the same on a national level. he would have been better off if he went with fellow Carmen boys pasinabo and bolo to bacolod and tried out for schools there.

yup, the new CFA board has been pushing the right buttons. Montayre has very able leutenants in Bro.Aberasturi and Raffy. hopefully, the combined financial and logistical weight of Dakay and Moraza will be felt soon.

along with the good start are heightened expectations. i have high hopes and i am confident that this new board will not be a flash in the pan but will achieve in implementing medium-long term policies that will definitely bear fruit and shall be adopted by future administrations.

they will have to deal with this high expectations. i am certain that they will not yield to pressure from one particular faction of cebufootball, but will work for the whole community.
