San Roque rules again PDF Print E-mail

LONDON - SAN Roque parish in Mandaue city is another breeding ground of football talents in Cebu province.

It has been very quiet in that part of the overcrowded barangay of Subangdaku for several years.

Quiet... until San Roque Football Club won the Men's Open title in the 1st Cebu Beach soccer championship in Badian last year and also the Men's Open crown and the 38 and above divisions titles of the Thirsty Cup held recently at the Cebu city Sports Center.

Back in the 80's San Roque produced countless of good footballers that most school varsities in Cebu city are made up of players from the parish.

LEGENDARY

Even the legendary M. Lhuillier football team of Graeme Mackinnon was made up almost entirely of players from the area.

The prolific striker Rene 'The Animal' Maambong, `small but terrible' defender James Pardillo, reliable defender Rene Inoc, willy wingman Rami Colina, Dennis Colina, the tiny Catarinen brothers Ramie and Eddie, and Bert Eco all come from SanRoque.

Even the tireless midfielders, the Aller brothers Genard and Gever and the Orejudos brothers Jose and Dante, all grew up and started playing ball at San Roque.

Those were in the 80's and then the talent flow started to decline in the 90's and in the early 2000.

The main reason was that, the San Roque field located inside the San Roque parish ground, is at the mercy of whoever is in charge of the parish.

DECLINE

It was the result of the non-involvement of the priest assigned in the parish to football.

When I visited San Roque in the summer of 2006, I was surprised of the football activity that the parish was involved in. They were then having the San Roque football festival.

Hundreds of age group teams were crowded in the parish grounds and dozens were seeing action in the five-a-side tournament inside the football pitch.

It was amazing to look at. I even got some video footage of that event.

REVIVAL

The main reason of the sudden revival was the appointment of football loving priest Rev. Fr. Ranilo Mahumot as parish priest.

Mahumot started to develop the parish grounds by constructing a parking space, building a decent canteen and then fixing the football field.

Fr. Mahumot did an amazing job in re-building San Roque. That was when San Roque Football Club kicked off it's revival.

Tireless Ivan Ancajas then led the SRFC reorganization with the help of Marlon Escoton and many more football loving San Roque parishioners.

Ancajas was a member of the University the Visayas Greenbooters during his college days.

SRFC now has more than 200 players in different age group categories plus girls age 12 and 17.

Cebu International School coach Eliezar Toledo is now one of the new generation of football leaders in San Roque.

Toledo used to play for me at University of San Carlos in the early 90's.

He then transfered when I left USC in 1994 to the University of San Jose-Recoletos to resume his college football career and finish his Business Administration course.

Toledo is football fanatic through and through and even quit his salesman job to concentrate on coaching kids.

He coached the Bright Academy first but moved to Cebu International School last year.

So in love is Toledo with football that he managed to convinced his wife to take up the sport.

His wife, a former gymnast at University of Southern Philippines, is now the skipper of the San Roque ladies team.

San Roque has been a leader in football development in Cebu.

Football is currently getting back the support from the parish leaders. A number of kids are also being trained and developed.

With this new development there is now reason for this tiny but vibrant community to dominate Cebu football once again. GOD BLESS

some corrections of my last comment:

Tonio Trebol is of DBTHS batch '82 not '88 as what i had wrongly typed. mao ni siya'y ga bunal ug pala ni now Bishop Prescisio Cantillas SDB, D.D. who then was a brother during the construction of the Shop Buildings at our buhisan campus. as waht tonio told me the HAMMERING was ignited when
Cantillas did not allow him to have a snack break. hehe, bunalan nuon.

about the San Roque football field, as i would recall what SRFC prexy ivan ancajas told me; football was born in Subangdaku, mandaue city when the Vicentian Fathers arrived. they were looking for a place and the Salesians of Don Bosco led by Fr. Peter Zago helped them . the football field was built with the help of one of cebu football patrons, Mike del Gallego who rendered the use of his heavy equipments for free. the salesians and the vicentians frequently played a lot of games then, which probably sparked the interest of the residents. so indeed there was a "Bosconian Connection".

i was moved when i had a talked with elying some years back and told me " kani atong gibuhat mao man ni ang gibuhat ni Don Bosco". Elying did not graduate from Don Bosco but the spirit is in him thru football. but i was'nt so surprised because i knew that he was one of your countless players in the '90's.

i'll email you some pix after this.

by the way, congrats to your hometeam in U.K., TOTTENHAM HOTSPURS for their latest title.

GODSPEED!

  jack,

kmusta naka diha oy, is it true that you'll be back here this april?

anyway, i would just like to add some words about SRFC.

i have been oriented with the club's revival some years ago thru Elying and the one mover you forgot to mention, your mestizo version when he was a little bigger---- Tonio Trebol. i have known tonio way back on my HS days as he was a neighbor of my HS and college friend, supporter, batchmate Andy Torrefiel. Tonio is of DB batch '88 while me and andy were of batch '88.

i can see football in the heart of this guy, after i had covered the war in central mindanao last 2003, i frequently spent some time at san vicente village to hang-out with friends. then i was so happy to see little boys & girls so involved with soccer thru the mentorship of tonio, elying and bobbit colina.

right there and then i can see the spirit of St. John Bosco's mission to the youth. some of my batchmates were already playing with the teams of Don Bosco alumni, Niel Montesclaros invited me to join them but i simply cannot get away with SRFC because it's not just all play. there's a lot of advocacy to do with the less privileged children so are so eager to play footbal.

one liitle girl when ask by Tonio if he wants to play said "ganahan kaayo ko moduwa coach pero dili lang ko kamao pa". as soon as she was trained by tonio together with some kids she then dispalyed talent and determination. pero pag pangutana kung asa siya puyo, she replied "sa Makro". a surprised Coach tonio replied "naa diay balay diha sa makro nga Supermarket man na?"

the little lass replied, "sa ilawm sa makro ba!"

paghatod ni tonio sa bata, he then understand what she said ----- the little girl together with her parents LIVED UNDER THE BRIDGE BESIDE MAKRO SUPERMARKET in a makeshift house of cartoons and waste plywood boards and anything that could keep them warm from the cold wind at night coming from both the air above them and the murky waters below.

she is just one of SRFC's heartmoving stories, naa pay daghan. dihay mga night entertainers sa mga night clubs diri cebu nga naka duwa ug pila ka games sa mga girl's team. wa mi kahibaw at first until they told coach tonio. now, they had never returned to practice for they have to find money to support their families living along the shanties of mandaue city. situations like these could only make us stop for a while and look up to the heavens for more help and strength.
the club implemented a policy for players who want to stay with the club teams "NO SCHOOL NO PLAY".

tonio and elying could expound on this more, basta dihay 21 y.o nga mi skwelag balik as a 1st year HS.

last night we celebrated for the 3rd time the titles we've won during the last thirsty cup specifically for the 3 titles---- Men's Open, Men's 36 & 40 above.

jack, i have a lot of pix on the football events here from 2003 how can i upload them to this site? i havnt go to the photo gallery section yet, after this i'll click it to see what i can do.

ayo-ayo diha du!

GODSPEED,

victor k.

thanks jack. hope you can give us details.

anyway, if these "elections" results in a president who is sincere, has the support of the majority, and has the proper financial connections, then i see no reason why we shouldn't support him or her. if such a president does come out of this mess, then we should go forward and just fix whatever problems we have.

by the way, on sunday at 7pm, feb.24 which is Cebu City's charter day at fort san pedro, the POF u15 cebu city team National champions will be honored by the city government with the best athletic team award.

  Ronaldo,

Too bad somebody is manipulating the CFA elections again. I am free tomorrow so I have enough time to call my contacts.

  jack, this just in.

seems CebuFA will be holding it's elections TOMORROW at 10am WITHOUT due notice. several coaches just called me up to inform me that they were informed by someone else and not by a CebuFA official.

some will be questioning the constitutionality of the elections since some contend that the new by-laws is being implemented without the ratification of it's members.

that's another issue - who are the CebuFA members who will be choosing the next CebuFA board?

things are rather vague as of this moment. hope to give you a clearer picture later. if you can, try calling up your contacts here to verify tomorrows supposed affair.

san roque is our own scaled down version of barotac nuevo. it's a neighborhood community with a football culture wherein at least 3 generations of players grew up.

it's also worth mentioning in the same breathe the footballing community of Sambag 1. football families there includes the Ramos', the Acres, and the Buots - grandfathers, sons and grandsons, all football players.

during 80's and 90's, the University of the Visayas Greenbooters had the pick of the crop as far as Sambag players are concerned while the University of San Jose Kicking Jaguars attracted a lot of San Roque players. of course, all the other schools had at least a san roque player or two.

in men's open tournaments during the same period, no matter what team jersey one wore, people always considered the most anticipated game as the one between Sambag and San Roque players. Hard (sometimes dirty) games where the norm. and who could forget the rumble that eventually led to the parish priest closing down the field.

unknown to many in the community, the San Roque football field almost became a housing relocation site at the turn of the century for homeless workers of the archdiocese of cebu. all it lacked then was the signature of mayor pedong ouano but a political row between him and cardinal vidal scuttled the plan. good news for cebufootball at least.
