RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - Brazil scored three late goals to defeat Mexico 6-4 and advance to the quarterfinals of the FIFA Beach World Cup on Sunday.
Mexico led 4-3 after two periods, but Brazil - the defending champion and winner of 10 championships since 1995 - rallied with goals by Junior Negao, Bruno and Benjamin in the third period to win its second straight match and secure a spot in the next round.
The hosts outshot Mexico 27-11 on Copacabana Beach.
"We lacked concentration in the beginning and allowed some goals we shouldn't have allowed," said Buru, who scored twice for Brazil.
Brazil had trounced the Solomon Islands 11-2 in the Group A opener on Friday, while Mexico was coming off a penalty-shootout victory over Russia.
Brazil has six points from two matches, four points more than second-place Mexico and six more than Russia and the Solomon Islands, which will play each other later Sunday. Only the top two teams will advance to the second round.
Earlier Sunday, Spain upset Portugal 4-2 in Group B behind goals by Amarelle, Javier Torres, Javi Alvarez and Nico, also securing a spot in the quarterfinals. Portugal, a beach soccer powerhouse and winner of the world title in 2001, got on the board with Bilro and Madjer. The Portuguese lost the match despite outshooting the Spaniards 40-26.
Iran played the United States in the same group later Sunday.
