LONDON (Reuters) - Manchester United has won its 10th Premier League title in 16 years.
United retained the Premier League title on Sunday when they won 2-0 at Wigan Athletic with a first-half Cristiano Ronaldo penalty and a goal by substitute Ryan Giggs. United ended the season on 87 points, two clear of Chelsea, who drew 1-1 at home with Bolton Wanderers after an injury-time Kevin Davies goal for the visitors cancelled out a scrappy effort by halftime substitute Andriy Shevchenko. It was United’s 10th Premier League title and 17th championship in all and they will now go for a double when they face Chelsea in the Champions League final on May 21. Everton qualified for the UEFA Cup after their 3-1 home victory over Newcastle United secured fifth place. Reading and Birmingham relegated with Derby County.
Birmingham City and Reading were both relegated from the Premier League on Sunday despite winning their final matches of the season.
Fulham’s 1-0 win at FA Cup finalists Portsmouth, courtesy of Danny Murphy’s second-half header, meant they escaped the drop with 36 points.
Reading also finished with 36 after a 4-0 win at relegated Derby County but had an inferior goal difference. Birmingham, who beat Blackburn Rovers 4-1, ended on 35.
