By Jack Biantan![]() Posing from left with Spartan's Pres. James Pongos, Ormoc City Mayor Eric Codilla, Jumbo Rabanes....far right standing Baba Herrera with City Councilor Binggo Capahi and Coach Archival. GITAGUM - After capturing the 8th Cebu National Inter-Club men's title recently, the Pinoysoccer.com sponsored Don Bosco team have extended their arms and conducted a summer football clinic in Ormoc city, Leyte. Led by the prime mover of the team, Robert `Kid' Nicart and his reliable deputy Archieval `Baldo' Commendador initially conducted the football clinic to more than 40 Ormoc kids at the Ormoc city Central School grounds. Nicart, a Physical Education professor at the Don Bosco Technology Center in Punta Princesa Cebu city, and Commendador a member of the Salazar Institute of Technology-Don Bosco Boys Home team which won the Coke Go-for-Goal national title for Cebu in 1996, taught the kids basic football skills. They also incorporated in their training mini tournaments so that kids could enjoy playing soccer and at the same time learning ball skills.
The program, which is based from the very successful Ajax football academy of the Netherlands, is the same program that football powerhouse Don Bosco Technology Center is using. The program is designed by former DBTC athletic director and now Cebu Football Association (CFA) secretary general Bro. Jose Mari Aberasturi SDB and has made DBTC a force not only in Cebu football scene but also in the national level. DBTC captured the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) U-15 division football festival national title last year in Manila and recently the Palarong Pambansa elementary division title in Punta Princesa, Palawan. All the participants of the Ormoc football clinic are members of the Ormoc Soccer Afisionados (OSA) which was formerly known as the Ormoc Football Club. Presently, OSA is run by its president James Pongos, vice president Anthony Herrera, treasurer Jong-jong Subing-subing, secretary Joy Moreno, and board of directors Edwin Tumampo, and Henry Romo. OSA presently is using five pitches for its development program, they are the Ormoc city Central School grounds, National city High Scool grounds, Sta. Rita Seminary football pitch in Merida, Leyte, Leyte State University pitch in Baybay, Leyte, and the University of the Philippines pitch in Tacloban city. OSA started as Ormoc Football Club in 2000 with a men's team who were 15-21 years old. The women's team, whose members were from the local high schools, was formed in 2005. From then, the club joined tournaments in Maasin, Baybay and Tacloban including a beach soccer tournament in Olot, Leyte. In the summer of 2006 the club sent three teams, the men's, women's and the men's 38 and above to join the Cebu National Inter-Club championships. The 38 and above team won the title in it's division. The club also joined the 2007 edition of the Cebu Inter-Club. This year, with wider vision and more members, the club was renamed as Ormoc Soccer Afisionados. They are thinking of hiring Commendador as their full time trainer and then initiate more projects to spread to gospel of football to the entire island of Leyte. The club in their brief existence have already produced a national team player in goalkeeper Jean Mercado. Mercado was signed by Far Eastern University ladies football team in 2006 after being spotted by a scout in one of the local tournaments. She has also been a regular member of the RP ladies football team.

| Rommel Cuizon, commonly known for his subname "Chaoko" He played for Don Bosco, grew up in Don Bosco Boys Home... He is a former player of HIROSHI F.C and lately F.C Inter Cebu before moving out on his current team Queen City United. His son "Astig" (by subname) is the oldest together with his 2 baby sisters. They lived together with his wife somewhere in Guadalupe particularly on H. Labra St. Astig, an 8 year old kid who plays for Hiroshi F.C, Cardex and currently POMEROY F.C had died last night June 4,2008. Unfortunate kid left his Papa crying after he strangled himself on a mini rope (the one that is usually used on soccer shorts for tighting)(just like a shoe lace)... He made a joke of coking himself then slipped and fell down with the laces got stuck on a corner of one side. He immediately passed out. When his papa (Chaoko) got home, he saw his son (Astig) on a violet color condition known for the lack of oxygen on the body. Directly drove to seek help at the hospital. 15mins Astig struggles for his life but failed to see tommorow. He is now placed at their home (by now or tommorow)... I (We) send our deepest prayers that can make him and his family surpass the incident. Condolence to Astig. May his soul be in heaven. Whoever wanted to give donations and help our feloow football friend you can contact him with this number 09198149966.... He is in need of our assistance. whatever you may give will be appreciated. thank you. may this post be known and recognized all through out Cebu and the rest of football players within. |

| The two football-playing campuses of Don Bosco Cebu - DBTC and DBBH - are adopting the football program of Bro.Mari, specifically formulated for the grassroot level or P6-P10. It is actually a combination of the AJAX training program (Total Football) and the Coerver Method. Although both training programs have practically the same ste of exercises, it's the sequence that is different and the Ajax Method further applies basic tactical movements and not just skills development. The Oromoc-Don Bosco connection is further strenghtened by the fact that two of it's officers are Bosconians. The OSO president, James Pongos, is a batchmate of Fr.Jhun Paradiang (DBBH Rector) while the treasurer, Jong Subingsubing (a former seminarian), is a batchmate of Bro.Mari. Another prominent Bosconian who is into football and has roots in Ormoc is the president of the Don Bosco Alumni Football Club or DBUnited, Dr. Dido Aviles. He is also the president of the Philippine Beach Soccer Association, who will be holding the 2nd Cebu Beach Soccer tournament at Moalboal this May 17-18. Another lady footballer, who is a product of the Don Bosco Football Program of Br.Mari, is Futsal National Team member Honey Thomason, who is also a varsity player of Rizal Technological Institute in Pasig. She started playing football as a member of the Don Bosco Ladies Team. |
