ImageMEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Monterrey striker Humberto Suazo scored four times in a 7-2 rout of Veracruz while America extended their winless domestic run to nine games in the Mexican championship.

Mired in one of the worst runs in their recent history, America lost 3-1 at home to Pachuca to stay rooted to the bottom of Group Two with eight points from 13 games.

The defeat followed a week in which America president Guillermo Canedo and coach Ruben Omar Romano both said they would quit at the end of the championship in June.

America, who enjoyed some respite by beating River Plate 4-3 in the Libertadores Cup on Wednesday, fell behind to a Edy Brambila goal in the 43rd minute.

Enrique Esqueda levelled a minute later but second-half goals from Paul Aguilar and Leobardo Lopez condemned the Eagles to another defeat.

Chilean international Suazo opened his account with a long-range shot in the eighth minute, scored from close range in the 36th and added two more superb goals in the second half.

Jared Borgetti scored twice and Egidio Arevalo added the seventh while Aldo de Nigris and Arevalo, with an own goal, replied for the Red Sharks.

Monterrey are second in Group Two with 17 points, four behind leaders Santos Laguna, who were held 0-0 by Morelia.

Group Three leaders Guadalajara drew 1-1 at defending champions Atlante and Toluca’s 2-1 win at Puebla kept them top of Group One.

Puebla coach Jose Sanchez, whose side are bottom of Group One with 14 points, said in a televised interview after the game that he had been fired. (Reporting by Carlos Calvo; Editing by Peter Rutherford)
