CEBU CITY - FORMER Army man and RP national youth team standout Rocky Garciano scored a hat trick including the winning penalty shot to lead the Pinoysoccer.com sponsored Home Boyz Football Club 5-4 against University of Cebu team A in the 3rd day of competition of the 54th Don Bosco Technology Center Founders Day Futsal tournament at the DBTC Futsal covered court in Labangon.

Garciano blasted the Home Boyz winning goal from the penalty spot after an UC team A defender mowed down striker Archie Commendador inside the penalty box in the dying minutes of the match.

The victory sent the Home Boyz to the semis as they topped group B with three victories. It was a sorry loss for Borbon Cebu councilor Roy Melgo backed UC team A.

Melgo’s son teenage Jessie Melgo scored two quick goals for UC team A in the second half to put them in striking distance 3-2.

In the first half, Garciano scored two early goals and Rommel Cuizon chipped in one goal for a 3-0 halftime advantage.

Melgo’s two quick goals woke up the mostly UC crowd but their celebration was cut short when Cuizon added another one in the 26th to put the Home Boyz ahead 4-2.

But the Mariners never gave up as Rodney Gandionco rallied two quick goals in the 28th to level the score at 4-4. It was however UC’s last rally as Garciano’s penalty sealed the Home Boyz victory in the end.

`The boys performed very well against a very strong team made up of veterans. We gave them a scare in the second half which almost cost them their bid for the title. Our only mistake was giving lots of space for Rocky in the first half. However, we have proven that we can be proud of our team,’ councilor Melgo said.

UC team A moved then vented their frustration against University of the Philippines Alumni with an 11-2 thrashing in its last scheduled match.   The victory was not enough for UC team A to barge into the semis.

FC Inter-Cebu continued its march into the semis with a 6-1 drubbing of University of San Jose-Recoletos Alumni.

For the other results in the Men’s Open competition, Cebu Institute of Technology FC Monger nipped UP Cebu Alumni 3-2. Christian Paul Cuizon, Felimon Sabella, and James Navarro scored of CIT FC Monger
while Pablito Villarojo scored the two goals for UP Alumni.

Kamikaze, a team composed of Japanese nationals, drubbed University of Cebu team B 8-2, University of San Carlos team A also blasted University of Cebu team B, 11-2.

Pomposo Atillo led USC with four goals while Klyde Soriano added two. Jose Santillan scored UC team B’s lone goal.

In the lone match in the Ladies category, Cebu city State College of Science and Technology (CSCST) cracked University of the Philippines Cebu College 5-2.

Zhoey Saludar scored four goals for CSCST while Eldalene Opsimar added one goal. Bea Sagun scored UPCC’s two goals.  (With Jack Biantan)
