ILOILO CITY - The RP men's football team today (May 17) blasted Bhutan, 3-0, to finish the Asian Challenge Cup group 2 elimination tournament in a high note but ended up frustrated as rival Tajikistan advanced to the final round when the Tajiks blasted the smaller and younger Brunei squad 4-0.

The Azkals, considered as the best looking bunch of athletes in RP sports history, needed a goal from a header of substitute Chad Gould in the 39th minute before they could push forward for a win against the tough Bhutan squad at the packed Barotac Nuevo Municipal plaza pitch in Iloilo.

Gould, who did not start, but substituted the off form Ian Araneta in the early part of the match, found the back of the net off a corner kick from James Younghusband.

The Tajiks advanced with a higher goal difference after their victory over Brunei at the Iloilo Sports Complex. But, what was a great honor for the Azkals was that they never conceded a goal in the four team competition and never lost a match.

They won over Brunei 1-0 in their first match and held defending champion Tajikistan to a scoreless draw before their 3-0 win over Bhutan.

Backed by almost the entire population of Barotac, the Azkals dominated the entire match and Phil Younghusband added one more goal in injury time of the first half to put the Azkals ahead, 2-0, at the half.

Phil scored his only goal in the entire tournament after getting a through pass from midfielder Chris Greatwich. He escaped past his defenders and blasted the ball to the back of the net to the delight the Barotac Nuevo crowd.

The Azkals pushed for more goals in the second half as Bhutan tried to hold on. The Bhutanese however later on allowed an own goal in the 59th from defender Richen Pema after a scramble for the ball with Phil Younghusband.

"I am very happy by the way the boys played. I am however disappointed because we just fell short. We needed two more goals to qualify for India,'' RP coach Norman Fedigero said after the match.

Fegidero said that he is going home to Bacolod after this tournament and wait for the PFF if he will continue to coach the Azkals. Next assignment for the Azkals is the ASEAN championships late this year. No venue has been announced yet.

PLAN CANCELLED

It was really a disappointing loss for the Azkals as the PFF is already preparing for their trip to India. The PFF according to president Mari Martinez in an exclusive interview with Pinoysoccer.com said that he would send the Azkals to UK to prepare had they qualified.

The plan is for the Filipino community in London and the parents of the Filipino-British footballers to organize a training camp in UK for the India trip. But since they failed to qualify the trip to UK is now canceled.

The match started badly for the Azkals when striker Ian Araneta was served with a yellow card in the second minute after obstructing a Brunei defender with his body away from play.

Chieffy Caligdong and his left foot was once again busy at the left side creating crosses for the strikers in the middle. However, the strikers failed to capitalize on his efforts. His best scoring chance came in the second half when he was left alone in the middle. He volleyed the ball to the goal but his shot went wide.

Phil Younghusband had countless of chances including one late in the game which found its mark at the side netting.

James Younghusband did not have any scoring chance but played a key role in the first half setting up his brother Phil and Chad Gould. He was substituted in the second half by Arni Pasinabo.

The tireless Ali Borromeo continued to man the Azkals defense with complete commitment as he combined with his trusted lieutenants Anton del Rosario, Phil Greatwich, and Jobel Bermejo in stopping every Bhutan's attack.

Bhutan managed to squeak in some counter attacks specially in the second half that left the defense unguarded. Goalkeeper Neil Etheridge however was always alert and did not allow them a chance of scoring a goal.

Central midfielder Chris Greatwich once again marshaled the middle and set up the offense including the goal scoring assist to Phil Younghusband. Robert Canedo also partnered with Chris Greatwich in the middle but came back often to help the defense.

There was a slight commotion at the end of the match when the players from both teams almost came into blows after the referee blew his whistle. Cooler heads however prevailed.

The Azkals received a standing ovation from the appreciative Barotac Nuevo crowd when they held their lap of honor in front of the screaming Baratac fans.

Neil Etheridge even threw away his goalkeeping uniform, football shoes and gloves to the delight of the screaming fans.

To everyone so that you will not be deceived by people who are ignorant of the facts.
1) Joyce was hired by the PFF three days before the start of the the ACC.
2) Joyce was not hired because of the ACC. She was hired to bring in sponsors for the PFF in the coming days.
3) Please do not spread lies if you were not at the ACC.
4) Joyce was complaining about Paul W. because he was pestering her all the time with non-sense calls and texts messages.
5) Paul W. Where the hell did you get your report about Joyce being suspended by the PFF.
6) Joyce doesn't need the PFF. Don't you know that she is a member of the wealthy and powerfull Cojuangco clan? She came in to the PFF to help not to speak to some weird people named Paul W.
7) Paul W. come to think of it really hard if you have a brain. What have you done really for RP football? What have you done for Cebu football?
Lastly I have an article coming about my personal assessment of the ACC. I was there. I covered it first hand. I did not see any Paul W. there. Please next time ignore this man. He does not deserve our time. He brings more destruction and negativity to RP football.

Mikeh, it wont be the first time we heard about this guy's intentions. Its bad enough we have Filipinos screwing up the football program, and here comes a foreign expert to top it all.

Exactly how did this Joyce "fail miserably"? I wanted to comment about that conflict of interest before. I am pretty sure the PFF knew about this yet they hired her. Anyway, if it true they suspended her such a short time after they hired her, I guess that sums it up.

I dont really want to comment on what Phil and the rest of the team did since it has come from dubious sources. All i know is, the guys never showed anything like this when they played in Bacolod in 2006. And I am sure Norman would have a say in that.

ka ligo, i thought the PFF hired her not only for the Challenge Cup, but also for the future to try and promote the sport in this country, or? I dont know the truth about her and Phil, and i dont really care. Phil couldve said no if he wanted to. As for our dear friend, he is a liar when it comes to certain issues.

For the record, while I think that Joyce Ramirez failed miserably in her job with the recent Challenge Cup, and that hiring her, being the PR manager of the Younghusbands and at the same time PR of PFF, creates conflicts, I don't think she is THAT stupid. PR managers generally move heaven and earth to have their wards PERFORM better. Even a nine year old knows for a big game, you need ample rest.

On the other hand, I know a certain individual who goes by many names who thinks that 1 1 is debatable, depending on your football knowledge and hand shake.

Paul Weiler is not a liar, compared to him, liars are advocates for truths and can tell and distinguish self-indulged illusions from facts.

Rumors go around in some website and someone gets suspended. Then here comes Paul saying that the players are being disturbed, like the voice of reason. Whats the matter Paul, cant take the heat from Joyce so you get her suspended? poor girl (has anyone got her number?)Endorsements are a way of life. The PFF cant certainly pay him. Whats your basis for saying its getting in the way of his football? Phil still has a deal with Chelsea if we base it on Jack's article. Anyway, you guys at the PFF go around and do your thing (backfighting and politicking), its what your good at. Paul, your just dying to get involved with the fil foreigners arent you? I wonder why they havent come running to you if your the expert and the PFF representative in Europe? could it be a credibility issue? I'd have so much more respect for you if you were a Filipino with good intentions. I am just asking questions here.

You see, that rumour came from PW himself, he was the one who posted it on his site. He is many of the users on his site, just check it out and you might see that it is true. Not all germans write that bad, but in this case, its coming from 1 or 2 persons.

Ceburoo, i know. Only one person in this world is allowed to give critics to the Philippine team players, and thats him and his many aliases. Say something he doesnt like, and youre automatically a bad guy and a big liar. He has been like this for years now, i dont think he will ever change.   For the info of everyone,

There are lies being spread about Phil going out the night before their games in Iloilo city. Those are all lies. The national team members were very disciplined when I was covering them in Iloilo. I do not know who is spreading these lies. There was a member of the coaching staff who inspect their rooms at around 9:30 p.m. to make sure they were all in bed by 10 p.m.
There was one night that Phil, Joyce, James and Juan Cutillas were with me and my Photographer Victor at the Hotel's Coffee shop for an interview. But by around 10 p.m. Phil and James were back in their rooms.
The night after their match againsts Bhutan, most of them went out to party which is just natural for player who do not have games anymore. Brothers Chris and Phil Greatwich could not even make it to the party as they went to Manila for their trip back to UK and to the US. Phil was going back to US for his studies while Chris has gone back to UK for his work.
Next time do not act like fools and spread lies just to make yourself famous or infamous. Whoever you are, you are pathetic.

id rather watch them play than party.

anyway, the players did great sa games. whatever decisions the 'bosses' make is up to them and the players. we can only make polite suggestions and not impose what we believe is going to be the right thing. ALTHOUGH, there is too much hype in the whole celebrity thing.

they could have performed better in the matches, its always a yes. but what could we do? they are the ones playing. just because they can (play better), does not always mean they will. its still a team sport right? how about making them work for it as a team and not put the spotlight at specific people. player or officials. whatever.

i just want to see the team try their best and make us proud. and I am proud. ;)

we also imagine that pinoysoccer can package the infos better as we, so that you have no problems of understanding.

it was to tough and unfair, so we banned you.
interesting that you never repeated the degrades on this pinoysoccr portal.

Paul would you like to enlighten our reades regarding the scandal between Joyce Ramirez and Phil Younghusband that Dani (or is it another of your noms de plum) wrote about in your website. I believe that your/dani's allegations are baseless and in your own words are disadvancing (whatever that means) for Philippine football.

Maybe you should take your own advice Paul. People around the NATIONAL TEAM should not disturb this serious minded style of coach NORMAN FEGIDERO. You are effectively undermining this with your outbursts and those of you/dani.

MIKEH what I find interesting is that in Paul's words BUT CRITIC can be also positive sometimes.. maybe he will learn to go other ways ( maybe w/ a better football minded management around him ).....
and in Pauls opinion this is not disadvancing Philippine football but when you or I said simialr about Philip years ago we were banned from his website.

May 19, 2008

MikeH said: _

PW, Xantos didnt play for 3rd place, it was only finals and no game for 3rd place, so Xantos wasnt really number 3 in the tournament. A tournament without the best teams in Cebu. You think Phil will play for your team then go ahead and DREAM ON. It will never happen, wasting his talents to play for your team. Fact is, Xantos is on the bottom half, that you know very well. Its kinda weird, you say Arnie and Caligdong needs to play at a higher level, and now you want Phil to play at the very very low level?

Since youre apart of the PFF, then why dont you something good of it, rather than talking bs all the time. Offer Arnie and Caligdong to play in Germany, but we all know, you only talk and talk with no actions.

so If Philip YOUNGHUSBAND has no OPTION where he can play....
we offer him a possibility to play fo us !
( sure its performance depended )

ITīs UP TO PHILIP to say YES or NO for a philippine club now.

  MikeH,

itīs claer that you and I never running closer friendship.

BUT if you believe me or not, I like that Philippine Azkal NT get a higher quality niveau and that talents are not wasted!

Philip my point of view, maybe others have other opinions, not used hie talent in best way! YES, I ( can tell you other ppl too ) expected more goals from him. ( maybe 3 or 4 in the whole tournament )
My opinion is that the management around him, NOT forced his FOOTBAL CAREER in BEST WAY, so thatīs why some better performance is lacking in moment.
BUT CRITIC can be also positive sometimes.. maybe he will learn to go other ways ( maybe w/ a better football minded management around him ).....

We will see...
but PFF can not be depended only from 1 player, there are also other OPTIONS and hopefully local players can get more TRAINING CAMPS and BETTER CLUB-LIGA SYSTEM!
LOCAL TALENTS ( like Arnie Pasinabo and esp. EMILIO CALIGDONG ) have shown VERY GOOD PERFORMANCES in PAST. NOW they need MORE OPPORTUNITIES to play on HIGHER LEVEL and to get STEADY TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES.

I have been to Iloilo on many occasions with teams and it is always a test of one's team when you play against Iloilo in either Barotac or Iloilo City, and a pleasure to interact with the Illongo supporters.
Although I have not seen your fields for such a long time I still believe that Pana-ad is the Number 1 stadium in the country for football. But if Iloilo can get the City Stadium refurbished then there is no reason why Iloilo cannot again host international events in the future successfully.
Iloilo should be congratulated for stepping into the breach at the eleventh hour to host the games after the dramas of Bacolod and its refusal to co-operate.

Some DRAMATIC CHANGES and REFORMS have FURTHERON to be aimed by PFF!

Itīs pity that some negative tendencies seems influence national players, who failed to repeat performance of some some years ago. ( SEAG/ AFF CUP QUALIFIER)
The YOUNGHUSBANDS produced only 1 GOAL in advance PHILIPPINES.
THEY LOST THEIR POSITIONS in CHELSEA FC, maybe bec. of to much "modeling" and advertisments. HOPEFULLY other national players will not be affected by such tendencies of people around the national team.

technically, our team never lost. Etheridge never conceded a goal. and to give support, ilonggos braved the disagreeing weather and turned up at the venues screaming, cheering and triumphant in every occasion.

and i hope that it could happen again, here in iloilo. the team is stronger, better and has a positive future. the changes made paid off and the players, all of them were a beauty to watch.

in ilonggo, i really want to say: "ti kay gin pa tilaw nyo na kami di, tani masundan pa. damo masunggod kung mabitin. dayun-dayunon nyo na lang. maayo man ang resulta, biskan ga ulan, ano pa gid ayhan kung maayo tiempo?!" hehe.

sayang...but the boys played with a heart, we salute you guys! we fell short today, but lets continue, although we lose the battle, but we didnt lose the fight...it is just a good start di ba? a good start for a brighter future of philippine football, lets just hope that the media would help the game be expose, so that anybody would notice that there is a game right here that is blooming in our backyard. a new found one that someday would give us hope and more pinoy pride...and we will all said kaya pala natin talaga! SULONG AZKALS!!!! we're very proud of you!! naluluha na ko dito, man, i was carried away also.

I like the teams fighting spirit and showed true pride, eventhough we felt short only on goal differential, Lets build on these victories and hope to arrange more friendlies. The football rennaisance in the Philippines had begun so let the word out everybody..PFF keep the fire burning across Luzviminda. More media exposure for the Azkals!!!! World Cup here we come !!!!

  It's been a good run.

The positive responses show that this current team has done a fantastic job in lifting the doom and gloom that always seem to surround our NT.

More and more fans are getting behind the team and the infectious optimism of the Azkal fans is a huge, huge step from when we cowered in shame as the whipping boys of Asia.

I can't help myself. I too am carried away.
The future does seem bright.

Keep biting, Azkals!

Mr Mari, is it too late now for us to join the world cup qualifiers for South Africa? Maybe Fifa would be sympathetic towards us and organise a lst minute qualifying tournament for 'countries that had a sudden change of heart'. hehe. Please someone answer my question. Release desperate to know.

It's alright! At least our boys really improved! I hope there will be more tournaments for them to join, though, so that our Azkals could gain more experience.

All Hail The Azkals! Mabuhay and Pilipinas!

i watched all the games on TV and i was really proud of them. I think one of the reasons why they couldnt really score that much was the bad weather and the field, EVEN IF THEY DIDNT QUALIFY.... im PROUD TO BE A FILIPINO. they DID THEIR BEST AND THEY SHOULD CONTINUE TRAINING SO THAT THEY COULD REACH THE TOP... AND OF COURSE WE FILIPINOS SHOULD CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THEM!!!

bravo RP... KEEP IT UP. who knows WE MIGHT MAKE IT TO THE WORLD CUP!:)

i hope that even if the AZKALS did not qualify for the 2nd rd. of ACC, the PFF pres. is ready to take the AZKALS development to the next level. still, even if the AZKALS only had it's achievement by not conceding any goal & has not lost a match during the entire tournament, we should still be proud with what the AZKALS displayed. for the longest time, it's the 1st time again the RP mens nat'l. team has produced this finest result so far...
i hope that we could still scout great players that would really contribute for the success of the team.
i would love to see the AZKALS joining the world cup qualifiers!!! who knows, where they would go far...
gov't support PFF sound mgt. good coaching players talent right attitude = qualifying to the WORLD CUP!!!
