Coach Glen RamosBy Jack Biantan

LONDON - CEBU’S legendary and multi-titled football coach Glen Ramos is ready to lead the Cebu Selection team against the very improved Philippine National men’s team when they clash in a friendly today (April 27) at the University of San Carlos Technology Centre field in Talamban, Cebu city.

The much awaited clash is part of the Azkals preparation for the Asian Challenge Cup Group 2 elimination tournament which is slated in Barotac Iloilo and La Paz Iloilo city on May 13-17.

The Azkals will play Brunei on May 13, Tajikistan on May 15 and Bhutan on May 17.

Ramos, the only coach who has won a Coke Go-for-Goal national title for Cebu promised to give the Nationals a hard game in spite of forming the team in less than a week and having only one practice session.

“Most of these players are busy preparing for their own respective teams for Cebu National Inter-Club tournament, that is why we managed to squeeze in only one practice session. But I will not find any excuses. We will give them a good fight,’’ he said.

The match is the high light of the opening of the 8th Cebu National Inter-Club championships which is organized by the Queen City Football Club.

The Cebu team is bannered by former National youth team standouts Rocky Garciano, Fredie Alazas, and Jon Flores of Football Club International Cebu. Former National team player Oliver Colina of Don Bosco-Pinoysoccer.com will man the midfield for the Cebuanos.

Other players named by Ramos are Alex Buanghug, Kim Relucio, Henji Ruiz, Bong Aler, Warloo Sabella, Robert Nicart, Eleazar Toledo and Iry “The Legend’’ Henson all from the Don Bosco-Pinoysoccer.com team.

Also seeing action are, Jack Reston, Yansi Menchavez, Albert Nanquil Julius Acre, Mitsou Tsunakere, Hayato Ayabi, and Wati Abellana all from the Queen City FC, and Gary Garciano of San Roque Royal FC.

Meanwhile, the Azkals were very impressive in their 4th match in their Visayas tour when they plastered Queen City United 6-0 at the Cebu International School field yesterday (April 26) afternoon.

It was their 4th win in a row after they won against a Dumaguete Selection 2-0, Foundation University 6-1, and San Carlos city Selection 2-0 last week during their Negros Island tour.

Cebuano-British Chad Alesna Gould shrugged off the jet lag of a 16 hour trip from UK to RP to score two goals and lead the Azkals.

The multi-talented Gould, whose mother is from Cebu, paired with Ian Araneta up front and scored all his goals in the first half after fullback Jovel Bermejo opened the scoring with a freak shot early in the match.

Aside from playing professional football in England, Gould also fronts a British band Redgrave. They launched their debut album “The Whole Bang Shoot’’ late last year.

Gould visited Cebu last year to promote their album and held a mini-concert and conducted a mini-football clinic.

Seventeen-year old Barotac Nuevo sensation Joven Bedic completed the Azkals romp in the second half scoring two goals while Floriano Pacilan added one more.

The Azkals will parade the Filipino-British brothers Phil and James Younghusband today against the Cebu Selection.

Phil according to National team coach Norman Fegidero just arrived in Manila from UK and will travel to Cebu with his brother James and hopefully will beef up the Azkals.

The Azkals also conducted a football clinic in Lapulapu city through the efforts of Football Club International Cebu.

Ten teams in the Men’s Open, four teams in the Women’s Open, also four teams in the 38 and above and nine teams each from the 12 and Under and 15 and Under are competing in the Inter Club competitions.

FYI: as far as i know from the football players info here in cebu...

OLIVER COLINA didn't make it to the Mens National Team Regular Line-Up..I do believe he got selected to join the try-out and the training pool but got dropped.

Mainstays of the National Team are Jan Michael Flores, is a former U-16,U-19 Natl.Team and so as Rocky Garciano and Alex Buanghug.

Frederick Alazas is a former U-16,U-20 National Team and nothing follows.

While Michael Casas has the highest achievement of them all earning the U-16 and Senior Mens National Team...

Thats an interesting topic, the contracts players sign. I guess when you are below 15 you cant be paid as a professional yet. That would be child labor. I only say this because there have been a number of players making their pro debuts at 17 in the Premiership. However, I heard players like Wes Brown of Man Utd have been with the club since they were 12 where they sign "schoolboy" contracts. Although I am pretty sure they werent paid a real salary. It would be interesting to know what kind of contractual procedures players in Europe are required to sign once they start playing for the clubs there.

ethan, there is amateur contract and professional contract. we have that in norway and in many other countries in europe. amaetur players can have a contract without getting paid.its something regarding transfer rules and such.they probably have something like that in England as well.players like phil have professional contract, and james hall got one last year i think.

  Mike

What I know is that amateur players do not have contracts. Only professional players. Why don't we ask Chad.

Ethan, if thats how he makes a living without any other jobs, then yes he is a professional. there are two kinds of contracts, professional and amateur. you can still have a contract without making any money.

what?!. I don't think playing for AFC Wimbledon Reserves makes him a professional football player.
