CEBU CITY (SunStar) - The long overdue election of the Cebu Football Association (CebuFA) got another delay yesterday, this time, due to the influence of the coaches.
Coaches and players joined a meeting of the CebuFA board yesterday and after a few discussions, the group agreed to put up an ad hoc committee to tackle the issues on the election.
The coaches said they were not told of a CebuFA election but instead, they got the information from the Philippine Football Federation.
As a result of the talk with the CebuFA board yesterday, Cebu Amateur Football Club's Richard Montayre, the former head coach of the University of San Carlos, was elected to head the ad hoc committee with Eleazar Toledo and Brian Bedford of Cebu International School as members.
The other members of the committee are Rachel Gengco of Giussepe, Manfred Schuwerk of FC Inter Cebu, Nilo Ferraren, and Bro. Mari Aberasturi.
"Both parties decided to help each other and came up to an agreement to put up an ad hoc committee. Both parties want what is for the good of football here in Cebu," Montayre said in an interview with Sun.Star.
The committee will determine the qualification of a CebuFA member and to inform the football community of the election schedule.
The CebuFA has problems in identifying members since there used to be a membership due paid annually but that practice was stopped four years ago.
"In my personal view, I propose giving the existing teams and clubs a vote. But we will have to discuss it," said Toledo.
In the past, individual members, even from the same club, can vote.
The ad hoc committee will meet on Tuesday to discuss the criteria and in the next few days, they will present the criteria to the board and the Cebu football community.
The CebuFA elections was supposed to be held last July, 2007 but this was postponed to December 2007, since that was the stipulated date of the 2003 CebuFA consitution.
However, the coaches and members of the football community are questioning the 2003 constitution since they never got to ratify it.
"Nahulog na invalid kay wala na ratify," Springdale's Mario Ceniza told Sun.Star yesterday.
Aside from the delay in the election, the CebuFA has also failed to hold the annual Aboitiz Cup for the various youth age groups and the Men's and Women's Open in 2007.
