BACOLOD (SunStar) — At least seven former active campaigners of the last RP men's national football squad including three Fil-foreigners, and eleven Negrense standouts are among the twenty six players RP team head coach Norman Fegidero, Jr. expect will report to the National Football Training Center in Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo starting March 24 for the start of training camp for prospective members of the RP team who will see action in the 2008 Asian Challenge Cup Group 2 Qualifiers set later this year.

Fegidero told SunStar Bacolod in an interview yesterday he has invited Fil-foreigners Philip Younghusband, Henry Brawner and Anton Del Rosario as well as Manila-based ex-nationals Emelio "Chippy" Caligdong, Ian Araneta, Ali Borromeo and Peter Jaugan to join the camp.

Fegidero said he decided not to get Fil-British Chris Greatwich "because he can't commit to come earlier and stay longer than about a month."

The former RP team striker also confirmed his inclusion of Bacolod-based Negrenses Archie Bayquin, Arnie Pasinabo, Floriano Pacilan and Michael Casas of University of St. la Salle, and Joel Ballo-allo, Robert Ca¤edo, Joven Bedic and Lemuel Unabia of West Negros University.

The other Negrenses in the list are Manila-based Edward Sacapa¤o, Edmundo Mercado, Jr. and Alijandro Montelibano, Jr.

Fegidero visited the Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA) PFF Regional Football Training Center in Bago City yesterday to help oversee the training of the province"s U-17 team preparing for its stint in the WWRAA Meet in Antique on March 13. The team is bannered by San Carlos City standouts mentored by former USLS varsitarian Roderick Parel.

The Asian Challenge Cup Group 2 Qualifiers involving the teams from Brunei, Tajikistan, Bhutan and Philippines was originally scheduled at the Panaad Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan but has been transferred to Iloilo City. It is slated May 11-19 and will reportedly be staged simultaneously in two venues- the Barotac Nuevo football field and the Iloilo Sports Complex.

howdy people. i heard we're hosting some challenge cup qualifiers. very nice. it's been a long time since i've seen our boys in football action. i hope we do much better than the last asean cup. were those the last games or was i just away for far too long? anyways, despite the 4-nil losses and the minus eight goal diff, i never lost faith then, and i still have faith now. =)

well i still remember when we had a foreign coach then, from germany and his assistance were coach aris and coach bob, guess what happened?

afer that coach aris befcame head coach and the teams performance was better than before not that the foreign coach was not that good or anything but if were gona get sum1 we need sum1 to work with the team at least a year to get the team chemistry, improve individual skills and get as much match experience as possible after that im sure improvement in the standings will happen, just look at the guys who played in bacolod they didnt have a year but look what happened? imagine if we had a yaer at least to get ready....*sigh*

I completely agree with Paulo and Mike. There are realities about our situation that we need to work with. Scheduling and commitments of our Fil-foreigners will always affect our team so I think we should really learn to play thru these challenges. Norman is an experienced player, I think he probably has represented the country the most times and he definitely knows the limits of Philippine football. By the way, we have had foreign coaches before, for gab's information. At the end of the day, even if we have Jose Mourinho as coach, I somehow doubt it will turn us into over night sensations. There are a lot more factors involved in getting the National Team to the next level. Just to get us up to the same standard as say, Vietnam would already be a spectacular achievement. Secondly, support the team whether we win or lose so David if you have that luxury to go to Iloilo, do it. But to Paolo and Mike, lets not be too hard on the other guys. I think its good that we are getting more fans for Philippine football who care one way or the other. (even for the James Younghusband fan). At the end of the day we want to get more Filipinos into this so that more money will pour into football rather than basketball.

gabs, yeah lets fire the whole administration in the PFF so we can afford a foreign coach. Lets not use any money at all on grassroot programs, tournaments and dont give any money to all the FAs in the country so we can afford that coach. Lets show him that this country has no league, that 7aside festivals are dominating the country. Yeah he can pick players he has seen on 7aside festivals. Hows that for a starter? I LOVE football games and i know how football games work, maybe i should be coach then?

You see, its not that easy as you say. Take a look at the game soccer management? I say thats totally BS.

As for players like James and others arent invited, well, has anyone considered that they might have other commitments? I dont know about James, but players like Phil Greatwich is studying in the US. If he has a scholarship and his team is still in the playoff or something, then he must concentrate on that. It means that his school is work and thats first priority. As for his brother Chris, he is under contract and he cant just leave whenever he wants. Its his source of income and often that has to come first.

Im sure coach Norman knows what he is doing.

PFF wake-up!!! before you deploy fil-foreign talents to our mens nat'l. team, consider first getting a coach who really has the mastery of the game. i am spaeaking of considering a european or a brazilian national for that matter, definitely all they could say is that our mens team needs a total overhaul before team PHILS. could become competetive. moreover, would it be nice to go with the evolution of the game when team managers are the real go-to-guy of the team. pls. see the Play Station game "soccer management" or related game so that you can relate & appreciate what it is all about. lastly, we as filipinos, must admit that it would take another 50 to 100 years before the world recognizes us that we could play at least good football, so why not consider fielding in naturalized europeans or brazilians for the nat'l team, wherein definitely thousands promising talents arejust waiting to be noticed. i hope you'll think about these...

Line up looks strong but I wish the reporter could have just enumerated the entire training team on a separate file and further divided that into forwards, midfielders, defenders and goal keepers. I am sure a lot of people would be interested who among our friends made it to the training team.
