By Peter Atencio MANILA (ManilaStandard) - KAYA FC and Manila-All Japan FC held their foes to draws on Sunday as the 2008 Puma-United Football League got under way at the Nomads Field in Merville, Parañaque. Sudanese striker Izu El-Habib struck twice for Kaya FC as it held host Nomads FC to a 2-all standoff, while University of the Philippines exchange student Simichi Miyagawa scored the crucial goal in the second half as Manila-All Japan FC also forced a 2-2 draw with last year’s runner-up Pasargad. The draws put Super Friends and Loyola FC on top of the three-month tournament, which lured nine of the finest football clubs in Metro Manila. Super Friends turned back Union FC, 4-1, while Loyola FC blanked Africa Mama, 4-0, early afternoon action at the Ateneo grounds in Katipunan. El-Habib, a biology student at De La Salle University-Manila broke the ice for Kaya FC when he eluded two defenders and rolled in Kaya’s first goal in the 13th minute. But the Nomads made things difficult for Kaya FC after Nicky Serrano equalized in the 33rd minute, and Darren Hartman put the host team in front with another marker in the 46th. El-Habib found another chance to score when the lanky and aspiring applicant to the La Salle Green Booters varsity squad charged the net again and slammed Kaya’s second goal in the 47th minute. Rodney Leyble and Elvin Marcellana put Pasargad on top, 2-0, on goals in the 46th and 48th minutes, respectively. But their Japanese foes stepped up on defense in the ensuing play, and banked on attacks from Atsushi Kotano and Miagawa to hold Pasargad in check for the draw. Miagawa, an Economics major, rolled in Manila-All Japan’s tying marker in the 65th minute from 15 meters. Pasargad attempts to wrest the solo lead when they clash against the Super Friends at 8 p.m. at the Nomads Field on Sunday.
