By Jack Biantan LONDON - THE Cebu city secondary football team are ready to kick “balls” and defend their title in the coming Central Visayas Athletic Association (CVRAA) meet which will kick off in Bohol on March 25-31. According to team coach Mario Ceniza, the team has been preparing for a while now and they are prepared to meet other teams from Cebu Province, host Bohol, Lapulapu city, Mandaue city, Toledo city, Siquijor, Dumaguete city and Negros Oriental province. Cebu city is represented this time by PAREF Springdale team which gained the right to represent Cebu city after they upset powerhouse teams Don Bosco Technology Center and Abellana National School in the Cebu city meet. However, Ceniza who is considered as a living legend in the Cebu football community, will not take the other Central Visayas teams too lightly and has tapped the services of players from Abellana National School, Camp Lapulapu High School and University of Southern Philippines Foundation. He said that he also wanted to pick other players from DBTC but nobody showed up during training. “I understand because DBTC is far away and the school year was ending during our preparations. Probably they were busy with their studies”, he said. Ceniza relies on Paulo Pascual of PAREF Springdale and Francis Villarico of ANS to man the posts. Their defensive wall are manned by reliable defenders also from PAREF Springdale TJ Mateo (team captain), and Gabriel Rodriguez. Giving them support are Aljohn Armamento and John Paul Diao of ANS. Completing the cast at the back field are Jeryll Enriquez of Camp Lapulapu High School and Jephunee Pelayo of USPF. Mateo and Armamento are the pillars of their defense. They are also veterans from last year’s Cebu city team to the CVRAA and the Palarong Pambansa. Leading the midfielders is also last year’s CVIRAA and Palaro veteran Ryan Bordalba also of ANS. The rest are rookies to the team and are all from PAREF Springdale. They are former two time national U14 team player Kevin Tecson, Carlos Veloso, Kevin Tecson, Myles Chu, and Bran Myles Go. Ceniza is also relying on the “Mut and Jeff” combination of Evan James Mendoza of PAREF Springdale and Jundy Romero of ANS to provide the goals. “Romero provides the speed while Evan James also a former member of the RP national U14 team delivers the finishing touch”, Ceniza said. However, Ceniza added that he can also utilize Ryan Bordalba and Carlos Veloso as strikers if needed. Ceniza said that his team is balanced and most of his players can play different positions once needed, that is why he is confident that they can defend the title. “My only problem with this team is complacency. The boys tend to relax when they are in advantage. Anyway, I still have time to nail to their heads that it is not over until the referee blows the final whistle”. he said. The team has already played four practice games with positive results and they are scheduled for one more match before they sail to Bohol on Sunday. Ceniza seems confident with his team but he insists that there is a tough “war” ahead specially against teams from Cebu Province, Dumaguete city and Negros Oriental. Cebu Province will be represented for the first time by the players from Don Bosco Boys Home in Liloan. DBBH when it was still in Banilad, Cebu city, was a producer of Cebu’s top footballers. The Home’s football production line ground to a halt for many years when it moved to Lilo-an until the tandem of football loving Salesian priest Fr. Jun Paradiang and Salesian Bro. Mari Aberasturi revived it two years ago. Aside from Cebu province, Ceniza is worried of perennial football hotbeds Dumaguete city which is usually represented by Siliman University, and Negros Province usually represented by Negros Oriental High School. Despite of the tough “pitch wars” facing them, the Kicking Ninos are confident that they will successfully defend the title and represent Central Visayas to the Palarong Pambansa in Punta Princesa, Palawan next month.

hi Jack, Lapu-Lapu High School team is composed of players from 7 different high schools (Bankal, Sta. Rosa, St. Dominic, Pajo, Lo-oc, Babag and Abuno) with coach Rodriguez, their Elementary School team with players from champion Abuno, Mabes, Sta. Rosa and Central Elementary School and trainer Ramel Baguio from FCIC Lapu-Lapu. They had a hard time to get together for few days practice so they are unlikely a winner but they will look for the next years when more and more players coming from schools in Lapu Lapu.

Ronaldo, Ha, ha,ha. That was the most memorable time of my football life in RP. Winning the Coke Go-for-Goal national crown at the Rizal Memorial stadium vs West Negros College. I was so excited when we won the title that I forgot to take fotos.

By the way, DB BoysHome will have Glen Ramos as assistant coach to Bro.Mari. Ramos is returning a favor because it was Bro.Mari who assisted him in the U15 POF finals. This is the same tandem that won the 1996 Coke-Go-For-Goal crown, also with the HomeBoys (then managed by a certain Leonides Biantan). Both are hoping for a hat-trick of national titles as coaching partners. Also with the coaching staff as trainor is another DBTC coach and HomeBoy David Gerali. Fr.Paradiang will again act as team manager.

This is not the first time Don Bosco Boys Home represented Cebu Province in the secondary division. When the HomeBoys transfered to Liloan, they studied at UV-Compostela and represented that school in the provincial meet and also represented UV in secondary CESAFI football.. The boys now go to a public national high school nearby. I think this is the fourth straight year the HomeBoys will be representing Cebu Province. Fr.Paradiang and Bro.Mari reinforced the team with players from Balamban and Badian that they discovered during the provincial meet. Bro.Mari has instilled in his team a deliberate offence built around tall, mobile and counterattacking defenders, and swift wingers. for scrimmage games, bro.mari relies on the men's open teams of DBUnited, SRFC, Pinoysoccer.com as well as sister teams from DBTC to help hone up the HomeBoys. I have two Don Bosco teams to root for in the CVIRAA. Aside from DB Boys Home, the DBTC elementary team will represent Cebu City with Babot Bono again at the helm, and will be striving for a third straight Palarong Pambansa finals appearance. back in 2006, DBTC and Bono won the title, held in Naga City, after playing three straight games on a saturday morning. last year, they finish second to san carlos city in cotabato. the core of the 2007 palarong pambansa team (born 1995) is intact though, and we look forward to finishing higher. 1999 (or was it 2000?) was the last time a CVIRAA team won the Palarong Pambansa secondary football competition, with DBTC and Glen Ramos. hopefully, either DBBH or Springdale will bring us another title and cement Cebu as an emerging football powerhouse, if not THE powerhouse, of the region.
