FAST and exciting indoor football returns to the local scene with the staging of the Mizuno Powershooter Men’s Open Futsal Tournament on Saturday at the Festival Mall in Alabang,  Muntinlupa City.

“There were so many teams that wanted to join but we had to limit the competition to only 10 top teams. This will be the first time that we will have futsal staged at mall so the public can see how exciting the gameis,”  Ross Calixterio, Master Sports football division manager, said in yesterday’s PSA forum.

Joining Calixterio in the session sponsored by PAGCOR and Shakey’s at the Shakey’s UN Avenue branch in Manila was Paolo Cagalingan, general manager of Master Sports, exclusive local distributor of Mizuno sports gear.

Futsal, or salon de football, is played with five players to a side, including the goalkeeper, and is considered one of the fastest growing indoor sports worldwide,  Calixterio explained.

“The action is fast-paced and closely similar to basketball so I believe that many Filipinos can identify and appreciate the game,” he added.

On the other hand, Cagalingan said that organizing futsal and other soccer events is part of Mizuno’s commitment to the sport following its recent contract to become the official outfitter of the Philippine Football Federation.

“We believe that football and its sister futsal are both sports where we can excel. You can expect Mizuno to vigorously promote the game in the Philippines ,” Cagalingan said.

Known more for its golf equipment and accessories,  the top Japanese sport gear company, besides football, also supports other sports in the country such as volleyball and baseball, he added.

Calixterio said they have lined up three more futsal tournaments in the succeeding weeks, highlighted by the Mizuno Powershooter Women’s Open on April 13 at Club 650 in Libis, Quezon City .

The event will serve as a tryout for the national women’s futsal team, he said.

Also scheduled are the Mizuno 3rd Division Futsal Championship on April 26 at the University of Asia and the Pacific Indoor court and the Mizuno Youth 21 and under tourney on April 27 at the the same venue.
