MANILA  - THE Philippine Football Federation has a signed  three-year, P9-million contract with Mizuno to become the PFF’s official outfitter and a major partner in its grassroots development programs.

Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose Cojuangco Jr. witnessed the recent contract signing between PFF  president Jose Mari Martinez and Lovell Gopez, president of Master Sports Corp., exclusive local distributor of Mizuno sportswear and equipment.

Also witnessing the signing of the agreement were POC secretary general Steve Hontiveros, PFF general secretary Pablito Araneta, Jose Vito Borromeo, PFF national teams committee chairman and PFF technical director Juan Cutillas, among others.

“On the PFF’s behalf, I would like thank Master Sports and Mizuno for partnering with us,” Martinez said. “This guarantees that our national teams will be well-equipped with quality and durable football uniforms and equipment for training and international competitions.”

“We look forward to mutually beneficial relationship in the next three years between the PFF and Master Sportswear,” Martinez added.

“Self-sufficiency is something we always look for in our national sports associations. So we laud the PFF’s initiative in finding sponsors to back its teams and programs such as a reputable sportswear company like Mizuno,” Cojuangco said.

“We believe in the present PFF leadership and fully support its programs. Hopefully, we can also be actively involved the federation’s grassroots development by conducting tournaments and other football activities,” said Paolo Cagalingan, Master Sports marketing manager, who also was at the contract signing.

“Through the PFF, we also hope to touch base with its member associations nationwide and see how we can promote and popularize football in their respective areas,” Cagalingan said.

Under the terms of the agreement, Master Sportswear will supply the national men’s and women’s teams all of its soccer requirements from 2008 to 2010, including their outfits and uniforms for international tournaments.

Among the earliest beneficiaries of the contract will be the national women’s team that will compete in the Women’s Asian Cup second round from March 22 to 30 in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, site of the 2007 Southeast Asian Games.

Gabs, I agree with you on certain points. I like your enthusiasm. Especially on how the PFF can put more efforts to reach out to more Filipinos. But lets make a few points clear. PFF did not choose Mizuno. Mizuno chose them and they are paying the PFF 9 million pesos. PFF agreed becasue no one else made a better offer. Am I missing something or are you saying that if Nike are our outfitters it will make a difference on the team's popularity or prestige? It would only be prestigious if Nike paid the PFF to use them. If the PFF chose Nike I dont think Nike will give the PFF a cent. In fact we would pay them for the products they provide. Personally i'd be inclined to buy the Philippine jersey whether or not its made by Nike. Mizuno has always been a sponsor of Philippine football and that is probably due to who is heading their distribution here. I dont think they made the decision based on the popularity of football in the Philippines. Whats wrong with Mizuno? They are a perfectly good brand. Nike, Adidas and Puma will only start taking notice of us if we start winning or if football suddenly becomes our No. 1 sport. Right now, they are perfectly happy with the basketball products they are selling here, they will not spearhead any movement to make the national football team more popular as long as we keep buying their basketball products. Secondly, I cannot agree with what your saying about changing our national colors. How can you talk about being more patriotic and then say change our national colors because they are too common? Its like saying we should change the colors of our flag. Can you imagine Brazil stop wearing the yellow jerseys? I am not picking a fight here, in fact i would encourage you to keep coming out with the ideas. Just be more in tuned to the realities of football in the Philippines and the PFF. Primarily, its one of the most cash strapped sports authorities in the country and there is not too much it can do in terms of marketing and promotion unless its provided free of charge.

jerseys of every national team is an effective marketing tool to generate funds and most of all patriotism, so why not make the best out of it! as in the BEST out of it!!! i hope that team phils. could somehow be at par even with our other southeast asian counterparts, to mention thailand, malaysia & indonesia wherein they chose nike as their official outfitter. my point is that, i hope someone could realize that our team lacks promoting or selling themselves to the general public. it would delight thousands of filipino supporters of team PHILS. if we would hear big devts. for the team that maybe would start in little things like re-inventing the team. which south africa did. i mean marketing or promoting to the gen. public matters. re-inventing includes, primarily the PFF logo or insigna, hellooo... there are alot of artist that could do these, even a student for that matter that would really make a statement for the new look PFF. change of nat'l team jersey and its color. blue, red, & white are very common. and many more. i hope nike phils. listens... i hope you guys would spearhead to re-build the image of our nat'l team. over the years, it has been that way, team phils. looks somehow dull & boring, why? it's not merely on the achievement of the team alone, its also on making an effort to promote the team... could we not just follow other nations that their team jersey is a part of their souvenirs whenever visitors/tourists buy before they go back to their place??? NIKE/PUMA/ADIDAS wake up!!!

With all due respect to Andi, I really feel beggars cant be choosers. Were lucky that Mizuno will do this when other outfitters wont. When football gets on the map in the Philippines thats probably when we can start demanding more money from shirt deals. With how things are with the PFF, its a decent sum that they can surely use. Maybe send our azcals to some more tournaments or better training camps.

Lets put this in perspective, San Miguel spent more than 50 million for a team that didnt even make the semi finals of the Olympic qualifying tournament. You couldnt even see the SMC logo on our national team's uniform. That amount was just in preparation for the tournament (sending them to Europe to train and play against pro teams). Despite the poor result, SMC will probably dish out the same amount to prepare for the World Championships in 2010. Now thats purely for the love of the game. It just makes you wonder where our football program would be with just 10% of what SMC spends on basketball.

I wonder if Mizuno will make PFF kits and jersey could be made available at the Mizuno store? I'll buy Mizuno kits with the PFF logo and replica jerseys. If I know part of the revenue goes into supporting the PFF.

BTW I notice an odd thing with the PFF NCR XI selection vs. Hyundai FC. The PFF wore kits made by ADIDAS. They also had the cheaper Adidas Teamgeist replica balls. Not the 2006 World Cup match ball. I have evidence to prove that.

from now on I will start doing my little contribution on supporting the Mizuno brand. Just a little payback for supporting our Azkals.

9 million is better than nothing in a country where the sport isnt that popular like other sports. It has to start somewhere and Mizuno are willing to give it a go.
