ImageMANILA, Philippines (Inquirer) - Striker Angeline Impelido struck with just a minute left in regulation time to lift the Philippine team past Hong Kong, 3-2, Saturday night in the AFC Asian Women’s Cup 2008 qualification round at the Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground in Hong Kong.

The Filipinos, using the match as a preparation for the Thailand Southeast Asian Games in December, play the Hong Kong squad again Monday.

They advance to the second round in March next year if they end up with a superior goal difference after the home-and-away series against China’s special administrative region.

Hong Kong zoomed to an early 2-0 lead as defender Chan Wing-sze opened account in the 12th minute and Pauline Ng Po-lam stunned the RP defense with another goal in the 18th.

But midfielder Merlo Albano put the Filipinos on the scoreboard with an adroit strike in the 29th minute before veteran forward Edna Agravante leveled the scores eight minutes later.

The two sides fought tooth and nail for the go-ahead goal in the cold and windy autumn evening until Impelido found an opening in the Hong Kong defense and booted in the clincher.

“Because these are home-and-away matches, the goal (the Filipinos) garnered are considered twice the amount of the actual goals,” said head of delegation Cathy Rivilla.
