WEEKEND ACTION ROUND-UP

Meanwhile, despite the sudden downpour prior to the start of the games over the weekend at the Ateneo football fields, Philippine Navy, University of Santo Tomas and De La Salle University prevailed over their respective opponents in the league’s 1st Division.

Philippine Navy’s Michael Fernandez scored the quickest goal in the league after he knocked in the ball into the goal on the 1st minute in their match against collegiate team University of the Philippines. UP’s Allen Serna equalized five minutes before halftime on a diving header from an indirect free kick by teammate Andrei Mercader.

With the score tied, both teams gave it their all in a highly physical second half of the match. On the 70th minute, Navy’s Narciso Rosima was sent off for his 2nd yellow card. UP failed to capitalize on this advantage and despite being a man down, Navy pulled off an upset as substitute Nicholas Leonora headed the ball into the net on the 88th minute from a free kick by teammate Richard Leyble some ten meters from the corner flag.

UP tried to pour it on in the dying minutes but Navy held its ground until the final whistle with a score of 2-1. With the win, Navy moved up one notch in the ranking, taking 2nd place behind Philippine Air Force while UP dropped from 6th to 8th place in the standings.

In the other 1st Division games, University of Santo Tomas improved their ranking from 8th to 6th place as it won over tail ender Mapua Institute of Technology, 4-2. De La Salle University won over archrival Ateneo de Manila University, 3-0, while Far Eastern University drew University of the East, 1-1, to complete the four-way game bill in the 1st Division. FEU, UE, DLSU and ADMU retained their 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th rankings, respectively.

Over at Xavier football fields, Ilonggo United, Polytechnic University of the Philippines and Rizal Technological University won their respective matches in the league’s 2nd Division.

In the first match, Ilonggo United, leading 2-0 at the half, held off a late rally by Speilt Gern Unten FC to prevail with a final score of 3-2 while PUP completely dominated Loyola FC with a score of 4-1 in the second match.

In the final match of the day, RTU, despite trailing 0-2 at the half, overcame the odds to triumph over Xavier Alumni FC, 4-2. Coming out strongly in the second half, RTU’s Ryan Abarintos scored four minutes into the half while teammate Harold Lorenzo completed a hat trick by scoring on the 58th, 63rd and 89th minutes to win the match.

With their wins, Ilonggo United improved from 8th to 5th spot, PUP moved up one notch to 4th spot while RTU remained at the top of the league standings. With their losses, Speilt Gern Unten FC, Xavier Alumni FC and Loyola FC retained their respective spots at 2nd, 9th and 10th places, respectively.
